Boutique home building, renovations, and additions specialists Buildscope have announced they’re in the running for the ‘Renovation / Addition $1m to $2m‘ and ‘Contract Home $1.5m to $2m‘ categories in the 2024 Master Builders South Australia Building Excellence Awards. The winners will be announced on Friday, August 16th.
Having already won the HIA South Australian Renovation/Addition Project for over $1 million prize in 2021, Buildscope can once again place itself atop the benchmark that all other SA building businesses must measure themselves against.
The Master Builders Association of South Australia Inc (Master Builders SA) is the peak body representing all of SA’s building and construction industry. This year marks the 30th anniversary of their Building Excellence Awards, which have evolved into the most prestigious building industry awards ceremony in South Australia.
The ‘Renovation / Addition $1m to $2m’ nomination recognises Buildscope’s Myrtle Bank project, while the ‘Contract Home $1.5m to $2m’ nomination acknowledges their Tennyson build. Both are exemplary examples of Buildscope’s commitment to delivering excellence, time after time.
Buildscope is a family-owned luxury home building, renovation, and additions business operating from its boutique studio on Norwood’s elegant Osmond Terrace.
Jacqui, Peter, and Joseph lead an accomplished, dedicated, and loyal architectural, design, and trades team that operates like a finely tuned engine. With a combined 60 years of experience building and transforming some of South Australia’s most admired luxury homes, Buildscope’s assurance of quality and reliability is iron-clad.
Joseph shared that he and his team were “… excited to attend the MBA Building Excellence Awards this year, with entries in both the renovation and new home categories.”
“At Buildscope, we pour our hearts and soul into every project, ensuring that each home we build or renovate truly reflects our clients’ unique vision. Our unwavering commitment to providing a boutique building experience is deeply rooted in trusted collaboration, transparency, attention to detail and high-quality workmanship at every stage of the client’s building journey. We are proud to be among the contenders for these prestigious awards.”
It takes time and exacting attention to detail to deliver the calibre of work that Buildscope has established over the years; thus, they diligently accept a refined selection of projects each year, ensuring each commission not only calls upon their sublime capabilities but also harmoniously blends into their arresting project portfolio.
Behind the scenes, Buildscope is respected for its transparent and consistent communications and meticulous tracking of schedules that allow for variations and life’s unexpected happenstance, ensuring that all parties remain on the same page from the first consultation to the day they hand over the keys to their excited clients.
This commitment to craftsmanship, communication, and precision has placed Buildscope’s Myrtle Bank and Tennyson homes among South Australia’s premier projects at this year’s Master Builders SA Awards.
Myrtle Bank
While a new house build has a completion date, once it is inhabited, the clock resets as those who live and thrive within its walls constantly seek to mould the house into their home, an extension of who they are. Just as we change as we move through the passage of time, the actual passages we are moving through must also change to adjust to our changing needs and desires.
When Myrtle Bank’s owners approached Buildscope to revitalise their charming 1920s bungalow, they sought a business that embraced the spirit of collaboration. They worked closely with their appointed architect and with the family, considering them a vital part of the design-and-build team.
Jacqui shared that the client’s vision was to repurpose the existing spaces to “maximise the living and outdoor areas to enjoy with family and friends, whilst providing a separate, upstairs haven for their teenage children to hang out.”.
Featuring the curved facades and decorative brickwork of Art Deco architecture, Buildscope retained its 1920s heritage while shifting its style from a mainstream suburban build to one that captures the smooth curves, effortless style, and energising simplicity adorned by this era’s chic and fashionable elite.
“This house boasts masterful curves seamlessly woven into its design, highlighting an impressive brick feature chimney wall. The home’s centrepiece is the stunning Tasmanian Oak staircase with a fluted glass balustrade adding elegance.”
“Bespoke timber cabinetry adds beautiful, detailed elements with each piece carefully crafted. Throughout the home, the timeless aesthetic features a warm palette of finishes, showcasing natural timber blackbutt floorboards and decking.”
Peter shared that the response from the homeowner really speaks to this project’s success, “…the greatest compliment during the handover was when we noticed the owner had tears in her eyes. She expressed she couldn’t believe her home was exactly as the 3D images provided, saying ‘I’m just overwhelmed it’s to the exact detail’ when we sought clarity as to what she’d expected”
Tennyson
We measure the success of a new house build in three parts: form, function, and feel. Whether a building’s form appeals to us is entirely subjective since it calls upon our preferences and prejudices. Conversely, the tests of function are more academic and objective with binary outcomes; either it works or it doesn’t. It’s within the convergence of form and function that we feel that a house can become a home.
The Master Builders SA Excellence Awards are assessed by a panel of experts with considerable knowledge and experience in all industry sectors. While they can independently determine the success of form and function, the reality of how a house truly ‘feels’ can only be judged by the intangible sensations felt in the bodies, hearts, and minds of those who seek refuge, comfort, calm, inspiration, nourishment, and stimulation within it.
Thus, the feedback from this Tennyson homeowner on their experience was vital. Along with their satisfaction with the lifestyle-enhancing qualities of their new home, information regarding Buildscope’s engagement and willingness to involve them during the design, construction, and delivery stages contributed significantly to this home’s successful nomination.
Buildscope appreciates a client’s sense of ownership of their home, which is paramount to delivering the home of their dreams. Jacqui expressed her gratitude for the “invaluable trust, vision and input from our Tennyson clients, which guided our delivery of the beautiful, luxurious home they could enjoy with their growing family and friends.”
“We put great effort and detail into providing our clients with an exceptional experience, including a celebration of our building journey over a glass of champagne, admiring our collaborative design choices, selections and craftsmanship that eventuate into a home they can be proud of.”
Achieving a build worthy of the Master Builders SA Excellence Awards is challenging enough for an average build. But when your client has commissioned you to create a sanctuary within a coastal landscape that demands a high-calibre, complex build that must withstand the harsh, undulating elements while also allowing ample opportunity to invite those elements into the home’s living experience, you’re going to require the level of experience, skill, tenacity, and passion that is part and parcel of the Buildscope service guarantee.
Not only did this exceptional two-story architectural beachside residence deliver calming, comfortable, efficient living that speaks to the heart and lifestyle of its owners, but it also holds a timeless sophistication, leaving passers-by to pause in awe of its phenomenal finishes.
While the seamless integration of its structural integrity fades from view, its resolute sturdiness speaks of the technical rigour with which it’s been constructed.
Buildscope’s Tennyson build is simply awe-inspiring, with interiors looking out towards the zen fluidity of water. Be it the master suite gazing down upon the contemporary, soft white tile of the infinity pool or upon ascending the American Oak staircase to view the wild and breathtaking ocean from the upstairs living, bar, and balcony areas.
An expansive stone island bench primed for feasts with loved ones establishes the kitchen as the heart of the home, with the open-plan dining and lounge areas illuminated by the abundance of natural light that flows in and around the ground level.
Regardless of the season, the eye-catching sandstone feature wall with a built-in fireplace is as much a piece of art as it is an anchor of certainty, a connection with the landscape beyond the vast windows, and a gathering place for long chats or quiet, cosy evenings on cooler nights.
Vast glass sliding doors blur the boundaries and invite in the summer breezes on warmer nights, creating a seamless transition between indoor refinement and alfresco relaxation.
We could continue exploring the profoundly impressive moments of creativity, innovation and precision of this Tennyson jewel. However, honouring the maxim that less is more, take a virtual tour of it, and Myrtle Bank (at the base of Buildscope’s home page), and enjoy a taster of the sublime pleasures the owners of these homes enjoy daily.
Congratulations to the Buildscope team on stepping forward to compete for two gongs in the upcoming Master Builders SA Excellence Awards.
Having said that, we’re sure the ultimate award for the Buildscope team is seeing these happy families thriving within their remarkable custom-designed homes. Prize = won, twice over.
