The State Government of South Australia is gearing up to host a Major Economic Summit featuring three large forums about the development for the Upper Spencer Gulf region.
Premier Peter Malinauskas will lead the charge, welcoming citizens to three public forums, each accompanied by a community barbecue, to discuss the region’s transformational potential in the fields of renewable hydrogen energy, green steel production, and copper mining.
“Right now, in the Upper Spencer Gulf, there is a once-in-a-generation opportunity,” Malinauskas says.
“This region has the power to herald a new era of economic prosperity for our state.
“With our unique combination of sun, wind and valuable minerals, we can lead the world with renewable hydrogen energy, green steel and copper production.”
Scheduled to take place from February 25 to 27 this year, this summit will offer a unique opportunity for residents and stakeholders to engage directly with government officials, share their views, and seek answers to their questions.
Three Nights, Three Forums
The Major Economic Summit will unfold over three nights, at three distinct locations:
- Whyalla – Sunday, February 25, at the Westland Hotel Motel
- 4.45 pm: Free Community BBQ
- 5.30 pm: Public Forum
- Port Augusta – Monday, February 26, at the Central Oval Community Sporting Hub
- 5.30 pm: Free Community BBQ
- 6.15 pm: Public Forum
- Port Pirie – Tuesday, February 27, at the Port Pirie Sports Precinct
- 4.15 pm: Free Community BBQ
- 5.00 pm: Public Forum
South Australia has already established itself as Australia’s renewable energy powerhouse.
The State Government’s Hydrogen Jobs Plan is poised to elevate the region to the forefront of the global renewable energy landscape. However, this summit marks just the beginning of the state’s pursuits.
In addition to its hydrogen initiatives, the State Government is actively exploring the Northern Water Supply Project, a large-scale desalination plant, and pipeline network.
These projects have the potential to unlock Australia’s largest copper deposits and critical minerals, unleashing the full potential of hydrogen energy in South Australia. The collective impact of these endeavours is projected to generate thousands of jobs and stimulate billions of dollars in economic activity for decades to come.
“This isn’t years down the track, the work is happening now,” Malinauskas says.
“This Major Economic Summit is a chance to outline the scale of the opportunity before us and speak directly with the communities which will be central to this endeavour.
“We have what the world wants, what the world demands.”
