South Australia’s north is gearing up for another steamy weekend, with a severe heatwave warning issued.

South Australia is gearing up for another steamy weekend, with a heatwave warning issued for the state’s north.

The severe heatwave conditions will impact the North West Pastoral District from today, through to Sunday, January 21, with temperatures reaching well into the 40°C

Locations likely to be impacted will be across the state’s north including APY Lands, Coober Pedy, Hawker, Jamestown, Leigh Creek, Moomba, Marree, Oodnadatta, Oak Valley, and Roxby Downs.

In response to the impending heatwave, residents are advised to seek cool places, such as homes, community centres, or shopping centres, and to draw blinds or curtains early in the day to keep homes cool.

The South Australia State Emergency Service has emphasised the dangers of extreme heatwaves, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, infants, and those with medical conditions.

SAFETY ADVICE

  • Extreme heatwaves can be dangerous for everyone.
  • Severe heatwaves can be dangerous for many people, especially older people, babies, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with medical conditions and people who are unwell.
  • Seek a place to keep cool, such as your home, a library, community centre or shopping centre.
  • Close your windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep the heat out of your home.
  • If available, use fans or air-conditioners to keep cool.
