Major renovations are nearly complete on an Adelaide CBD apartment building for older women. The renovations include twenty, two-bedroom units with different layouts, private balconies and air conditioning.
The space will also feature a communal area where tenants can socialise, and the inner-city location is in close distance to public transport and the Central Market, making it easy for tenants to access all necessary services.

The renovations follow a growth in homelessness among women, with the Bureau of Statistics reporting an increase from 38 per 10,000 females in 2006 to 42 per 10,000 females in 2021.
According to SA Housing Trust, renewing buildings like this allows them to help South Australians get into modern housing faster. There are still finishing touches left to be done at the location, but many tenants have already moved in.
SA Housing Trust also works closely with YWSA Australia, the country’s only national women’s specialist housing provider, on similar initiatives to help women access housing.
Projects include the 15.7 million development on Hutt Street, led by an all-women team, that offers below-market rent for women and children escaping domestic and family violence.

Another key initiative is the 50-studio apartment block underway on Tucker Street by Mossop Group Pty Ltd.
“Every woman deserves a safe place to call home and the supports she needs to live well, to participate in community life and thrive, said Katrine Hildyard, Minister for Women and the Prevention of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence.
One tenant at the apartment complex reported that her new home will allow her to take control of her life and feel more like herself, and the convenient city location will open up employment opportunities. Other tenants have echoed this, with many coming from difficult living situations and feeling excited for what’s ahead.
This project marks a critical step towards addressing the lack of long-term affordable housing, strengthening support for women facing financial hardship and life challenges, and is even more important as the cooler months hit.
