Major road closures for VAILO Adelaide 500 event begin Friday

Starting Friday, Adelaide faces major road closures due to the VAILO 500, leading to significant traffic delays. Here’s what to expect.

Major road closures for the Adelaide 500 will begin rolling out this Friday. The RAA has released details on the primary roads affected.

Several key arterial routes including Wakefield Road, Dequetteville Terrace, and Bartels Road will face closures from November 8th, impacting the flow of traffic particularly east of the CBD. Analysis from the RAA indicates significant increases in travel times on roads such as Payneham Road, The Parade, Magill Road, Greenhill Road, and Glen Osmond Road. For example, the travel time on Payneham Road is expected to surge from a regular 17 minutes to 32 minutes during peak hours.

  • Payneham Road (Glynburn to Hackney Road) – 32 minutes up from the usual 17
  • The Parade (Portrush to Fullarton Road) – 15 minutes up from 4
  • Magill Road (Glynburn to Fullarton Road) – 18 minutes up from 12
  • Greenhill Road (Devereux to Fullarton Road) – 15 minutes up from 8
  • Glen Osmond Road (Conyngham Street to Greenhill Road) – 15 minutes up from 9

Beyond the inconvenience of extended travel times, specific intersections like that of Greenhill and Glen Osmond Roads will experience a substantial rise in traffic volume. Last year, an additional 11,200 vehicles per day were recorded at this intersection during the road closure period.

The scheduled road closures are outlined as follows:

6am Friday 8 November (6:00am) – 6am Thursday 21 November:

  • Wakefield Road,
  • East Terrace (Bartels Road to Wakefield Street)

6am Friday 8 November – 6am Tuesday 19 November:

  • Bartels Road,
  • Hutt Street (Ifould Street to Bartels Road),
  • East Terrace (Grenfell Street to Bartels Road),
  • Dequetteville Terrace (Capper Street to Bartels Road, northwest bound)

6am Friday 8 November – 3pm Tuesday 19 November:

  • Dequetteville Terrace (Bartels Road to Fullarton Road)

Charles Mountain, RAA’s Senior Manager of Safety and Infrastructure, spoke about the importance of forward planning for drivers in the eastern suburbs near the CBD. He recommended travelling earlier than usual to avoid the peak traffic times. “Travel time data from previous years shows the delays are at their worst after 7:30am,” Mountain stated, suggesting alternative options such as starting the workday later, working from home if possible, or using a bicycle to navigate through the congested areas.

Cyclists can exploit routes like the Norwood-Magill Bikeway for faster travel. However, it is important to note that some cycle paths will have detours, notably the Kensington and Burnside Bikeways across the Park Lands between Grant Avenue and Grenfell Street. For those considering public transport, the O-Bahn bus services provide a viable alternative, having minimal interaction with other traffic until reaching Grenfell Street in the city.

The City of Adelaide’s website holds a comprehensive list of the upcoming road closures and additional detailed information for commuters and residents affected by the changes.
