A new chapter of the decade-long multi-million-dollar Aldinga Sports Park redevelopment has begun.

The focal point of this next project is the construction of four state-of-the-art unisex change facilities, alongside new public toilets that will cater to the needs of visitors to the Aldinga Oval and sports complex.

In collaboration with the Aldinga Football and Cricket Club and with the support of Leon Bignell, Member for Mawson, the State Government is injecting $825,000 into the project. The Onkaparinga Council will provide matching funds, making this endeavour a partnership between local and state authorities.

The project will deliver an upgrade of the two existing Aldinga Football and Cricket Club change rooms and construction of an additional two new change rooms with umpire amenities adjacent to the clubroom building. The new change room building also incorporates modern disability access, female, and male public toilets to replace the existing aging public toilets. Construction works commenced towards the end of last year.

This development is designed to provide modern amenities for the sporting community, ensuring that the park remains a welcoming and well-equipped hub for athletes and spectators alike.

The Aldinga Sports Park redevelopment is an integral part of a broader masterplan for the sports park, set to unfold over the next decade and beyond. This holistic approach aims to create a dynamic sports and community hub that caters to various interests and age groups.

Stage 1 works of the Aldinga Sports Park Master Plan, worth a total of $4.71 million, saw the completion of netball court upgrades and new cricket nets. There was also service upgrades, with asphalting, landscaping, and footpath components. The turf soccer pitch was also set to be laid, enhancing the sporting experience for soccer enthusiasts.

The project also includes the relocation of the Aldinga Sports Park equestrian facilities, enabling the construction of the hockey and soccer buildings and a new soccer pitch adjacent to the Aldinga Payinthi School. The equestrian facilities will find a new home at Bowering Hill Road, Aldinga.

The Aldinga Sports Park has long been a regional active park, hosting a variety of clubs and sports, from bowling and croquet to netball, football, cricket, soccer, hockey, and equestrian activities.

The approval of the Aldinga Sports Park Master Plan in February 2021 paved the way for a comprehensive redevelopment, guided by community feedback and aimed at accommodating the growing population and sports participation levels in the Aldinga region.

This project aligns with the construction of the new Aldinga super school, Aldinga Payinthi College adjacent to the Sports Park. It creates a synergy between sports and education facilities, with the school accommodating up to 1675 students from youngsters all the way to year 12.

There’s still more ideas for the new Aldinga Sports Park on the cards, with residents in Adelaide’s south pushing for a $30m aquatic centre. Aldinga Centre Action Group are working to obtain funding and land calling for an aquatic centre to be incorporated as a part of the Aldinga Sports Park Master Plan.
