There’s something poetic about closing a chapter at its peak. After more than two decades of pioneering work in the Adelaide Hills, Larry Jacobs and Marc Dobson have announced they’re stepping away from Hahndorf Hill Winery, handing the reins to respected South Australian winery Wirra Wirra.
The news marks the end of a beloved era. Since producing South Australia’s very first Gruner Veltliner wine in 2010, Marc and Larry have built Hahndorf Hill into a name synonymous with innovation, elegance, and an unwavering love for Austrian varietals.
The decision to sell wasn’t made lightly shares Larry.

“After nearly a quarter of a century of a blissful and often exhilarating journey, I suddenly looked in the mirror and realised I was going to be 73,” Larry says.
A recent health scare and a memorable trip to Greece helped shape what he describes as a bittersweet but clear decision: it was time to retire.
As news of the sale broke, it was clear just how deeply loved Hahndorf Hill had become. The winery has not only won major global awards, including the recent 2025 Frankfurt Trophy for Best Wine from Australia, but it also earned the admiration of its peers.
One of Larry’s proudest moments came in 2017, when he received the Adelaide Hills Wine Region’s Wine Show Committee Award for his contribution to the local wine industry.
For Larry and Marc, finding the right custodians was everything.
“We were hoping to find a team that had a genuine affection and understanding for the Adelaide Hills, who understood our passion for Austrian grape varietals, and who had the skills to continue the precision processes involved in growing and making the wines,” Larry says.
“Putting all these elements on the wish list seemed like an impossible dream – but then Wirra Wirra came along.”

For Wirra Wirra CEO Matt Deller MW, the decision to acquire Hahndorf Hill came from a place of deep respect.
“The quality and style of the wines were the first thing that drew us in,” he says.
“Larry and Marc have built a reputation on the back of their pioneering work with Gruner Veltliner and their precision approach to viticulture in the Adelaide Hills.”
Matt describes the acquisition not as a takeover, but as an act of custodianship.
“We are not taking over — we are carrying forward. Larry and Marc have built something rare and beautiful. It is a privilege to honour that legacy and continue their vision with care and conviction.”
That vision includes continuing Hahndorf Hill’s identity and operation under its own label, with an independent cellar door and a commitment to the wines that have become regional favourites.
“We love the style of the wines and think there are further opportunities with other varieties that perform really strongly in the cool climate Adelaide Hills,” Matt says.

Looking ahead, Wirra Wirra’s focus is on learning from Marc and Larry during the transition, supporting the existing team, and making the most of an exceptional 2025 vintage.
“Firstly, we want to learn everything we can and ensure a smooth transition for the cellar door team, led by Dee. We’ve just finished a great vintage and we want to do it justice.”
While based in McLaren Vale, Wirra Wirra is no stranger to cool-climate winemaking.
“Our viticulture and winemaking teams are really experienced in this space.”
“We’ll treat each individual block differently to get the most out of the fruit,” Matt says.
Ultimately the goal is simple. Keep the quality first.
“That’s what Larry and Marc have done to get Hahndorf Hill to where it is today. It’s our guiding philosophy for both Ashton Hills and Wirra Wirra.”
Looking back, Larry is reflective but optimistic.
“It’s been a joy and a privilege to work with these exciting and exotic grape varieties,” he says.
“I have the fullest confidence that Wirra Wirra will be able to pick up the baton and take this narrative deep into the future.”
As for what comes next, Marc and Larry are planning some well-earned time off. Hiking in Greece is high on the list. And yes, there will still be wine.
“Whatever happens, it will always be accompanied by a glass of Gruner in hand,” Larry says.
