Mamma Carmela to serve up double the Italian goodness with new Port Noarlunga beach venue

Glenelg Italian restaurant Mamma Carmela will open a second store at Port Noarlunga, in place of award-winning seafood hot spot, Hortas.

Glenelg’s Italian food favourite, Mamma Carmela is set to expand its empire with a second store opening in Port Noarlunga.

Hortas, the renowned seafood restaurant in Port Noarlunga, will be serving its last mouthwatering dishes this weekend, only to be reborn as a new chapter in the Mamma Carmela legacy.

With 40 years of excellence on Jetty Road at Glenelg, this Italian institution is set to bring its authentic flavours and warm hospitality to the heart of Port Noarlunga.

Set on the beach front, overlooking Port Noarlunga Jetty, Hortas, become a hot spot for seafood-lovers and fine-diners since it was established just over a decade ago, with its contemporary Australian and Portuguese- inspired dishes.

Owners, Paula and Filipe Horta, were no strangers to the dining scene when they opened the beachfront restaurant, having been at the helm of the Brighton Jetty Cafe, Amadora in the City and Hortas Cafe at Brighton.

Over the years, Hortas earned a spot in the National Restaurant and Catering Awards Hall of Fame and become known for dishing up South Australian’s best local Seafood.

In 2018 they launched the Cabana Club, a licensed beach bar downstairs at Horta’s, offering a range of cocktails and Mediterranean inspired drinks, bringing the vibes of Portugal to the shores of Port Noarlunga.

And the good news is, Cabana Club will remain! With the team at Mamma Carmela reportedly planning to keep the popular beach bar open for business.

Filipe Horta said he was so proud of what the team at Hortas has achieved over the years, and while he’s not ruling out more involvement in the catering industry, he and Paula were going to take a well-earned break.

“Port Noarlunga has transformed into a very prosperous area over the past few years,”he said.

“It would be impossible to get such a magic spot anywhere else.”

He said support from the Onkaparinga Council had been above and beyond and the relationships forged with McLaren Vale wineries played a huge role in the success of Hortas, which he said he and Paula, were leaving “on a high”.

Hortas final day of trade is already a sell-out, and it is expected that Mamma Carmela will be dishing up their Italian favourites in the coming weeks.
