Marco Pierre White is coming to South Australia, and while he’s here, he’ll be joining Africola’s Duncan Welgemoed for a dinner to raise funds for bushfire relief.

This comes as part of Duncan Welgemoed’s rather spectacular fundraising mission. The celebrated Adelaide-based chef has organised eleven “once in a lifetime” foodie experiences, with all proceeds going towards Tilbrook EstateVinteloper, the South Australian Country Fire Service, and the Adelaide Hills Wine Region Fire Appeal

The eleven dinners will be auctioned off as part of the upcoming SA4SA Bushfire Appeal Gala Dinner Auction, and are currently open for bidding via GalaBid.

The last dinner to join the auction is a collaboration between Welgemoed and international culinary legend, Marco Pierre White. The dinner will see eight lucky diners given the chance to enjoy a five-course meal at Africola, Welgemoed’s flagship restaurant, accompanied at the table by Marco Pierre White.

“Duncan is a proper chef, he cooks food you want to eat – real food. Cooking with Duncan is a joy,” White says.

Set to take place on Thursday 2 April at Africola, the dinner will also feature a curated wine matching by journalist and wine connoisseur, Tony Love.

Bids are currently open with a live auction to take place at the SA4SA Bushfire Appeal Gala Dinner on January 31. At the time of writing, the online auction has raised a total of $73,299 in revenue.

With the exception of Welgemoed’s dinners and the Tilbrook Estate wine auction items (funds to Tilbrook Estate), all auction proceeds will go towards the SA Bushfire Appeal, set up by the State Government to raise funds for people directly affected by bushfires in Cudlee Creek and Kangaroo Island.

“[Marco] is a huge inspiration to me and my work and I’m lucky enough to consider him family,” says Welgemoed. “Marco and I thought it would be an excellent idea to cook Italian for our lunch together, a cuisine we eat above all else and one that we hold closest to our hearts.”

The first British chef to be awarded three Michelin stars, White has mentored world-class chefs including Gordon Ramsay and Welgemoed himself. He is visiting South Australia for a Q&A book signing on Tuesday 31 March, and a cooking and tasting show on Wednesday 1 April, as part of the 2020 Tasting Australia festival program.

“Wherever I go, it’s a luxury and a privilege to be invited,” says White. “I can’t wait to meet new friends and hear people’s stories and journeys.”
