The Marion Outdoor Pool is set to close for a short period after an attendee experienced symptoms of cryptosporidium.

“Marion Outdoor Pool is closed for 2 days to conduct precautionary treatment following advice from SA Health, who notified us this afternoon that a visitor attended the pool while experiencing symptoms of cryptosporidium. They did not contract it from our facility,” shared the Marion Outdoor Pool in a statement posted to its social media.

“While the risk to most visitors is low, we are taking immediate precautionary action and treating all pools to ensure the highest safety standards.

“If you experience any symptoms such as diarrhoea, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever, please contact your doctor, and avoid swimming in public pools.

“Marion Outdoor Pool will re-open to the public on Saturday 22 March.”

Cryptosporidium is an infection caused by a parasite that can be transmitted from person to person. Infection can be spread directly by drinking or swimming in contaminated water and eating uncooked food (such as fruits and vegetables) that are contaminated with Cryptosporidium. The infection can also be spread indirectly when hands, objects and surfaces are contaminated with faeces of infected people or animals (cows and other domestic animals).

Importantly, the parasite must be taken in by the mouth to cause infection.

The main symptom of Cryptosporidium is watery diarrhoea which occurs alongside stomach cramps. Fever, vomiting and loss of appetite occur less commonly but are also symptoms. Symptoms in people with normal immune systems usually last for about 1 to 2 weeks. People with severe immune suppression, particularly those with advanced HIV infection, may have severe, prolonged diarrhoea.

To prevent the spread, the Marion Outdoor Pool has temporarily shut down as an immediate precautionary action.

The pool is set to reopen this Saturday, ready for a weekend of fun!
