Mary’s Poppin celebrating 5th birthday with epic superhero bash

The beloved Adelaide gay bar is throwing an epic party filled with dancing and performances from their famous queens for their birthday.

Beloved Adelaide gay bar Mary’s Poppin is turning five! And in usual Mary’s fashion, they’re throwing an epic party filled with dancing and performances from their famous queens.

The superhero-themed party is this Friday, April 10 at 9pm, and you’re encouraged to dress up as your favourite superhero (or villain!) and join in on a night of fun and entertainment. As Stephen Craddock, Mary’s Poppin’s owner, puts it, “it’s definitely a time to feel superhuman or release our inner villain for a night.”

The party will have more than 14 birthday shows by the Mary’s Divas, and lots of other birthday-related surprises.

Since its opening in 2016, Mary’s Poppin has grown tremendously and established itself as a go-to staple in the Adelaide nightlife scene. Craddock reminisces about the bar’s inception, and how far the now-iconic spot has come in just five years.

“We’ve gone from our humble beginnings upstairs in our little first floor bar into taking over the entire venue turning it into Australia’s best pink party palace, or the ‘Jewel Of Adelaide,’ as I like to call it,” he says.

Craddock began producing LGBTQIA+ community-focused events in 2001 in Sydney, and now produces the Rupaul’s Drag Race Shows in Australia through his other business. Through his many years of experience, he cultivated Mary’s, which he says is a venue unlike anywhere else.

“Mary’s is truly one of the best nightspots for the community anywhere in Australia, New Zealand and Asia,” he says.

“I literally can’t think of a better club in terms of size, fit out, shows, music and offerings anywhere that’s gay-owned and operated; I’m just so proud of it.”

Craddock didn’t build Mary’s on his own, though. The owner emphasises that the team of nearly 50 people––including drag queens Eve Elle, Luci Furr, Wundes, Stacy Queen, Kane Enables, Ali Xpress, Berri Juicy, Stacy Queen, and Thermodynamics––who make the bar the lively place that it is.

“They are just incredible, and they get better and better with age just like a fine vintage from the Adelaide Hills,” he jokes.
