Mass Wedding And March To Demand Equal Rights

This Saturday May 14, hundreds of equal rights supporters are expected to take to the streets of Adelaide for a mass wedding and march from Victoria Square to Parliament House, opposing homophobia and demanding full marriage equality for same sex couples.

The event, organised by Equal Love Adelaide and hosted by local celebrity ‘Haans’, will be one of many happening around the world to mark IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia).

Speakers at the rally will include Greens’ Senator Sarah Hanson-Young and Ian Hunter MLC of the Labor Party, and the mass wedding of same-sex couples will feature a performance by acclaimed singer/songwriter Emily Davis.

Equal Love hopes that the display of community support against homophobia and for equal marriage will encourage South Australian Members of Parliament to push for an end to end all discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity.

“Recent polls show over 62% of all Australians and 80% of younger Australians are in support of full marriage equality.” says Equal Love’s Jason Virgo.

“We hope that on IDAHO, a day which highlights the struggle for equal rights of LGBTI people around the world, that politicians will listen to the growing demand of the public to give equal recognition to same-sex relationships.”

Other speakers include a high school student who will discuss her project to combat homophobia at her school, and representatives from trade unions and community groups.
