Co-Artistic Directors Eddie Perfect and Ali McGregor announced on stage last night during The Last Galah that next year’s Festival will be bigger than ever before as Matilda The Musical will run before, during and after the 2017 Adelaide Cabaret Festival opening on May 20 at the Festival Theatre.
Adelaide Festival Centre CEO and Artistic Director, Douglas Gautier says “Adelaide audiences have been well served with musicals throughout 2016 from Ghost The Musical, Cats, Sound Of Music and finishing off the year with We Will Rock You in December.”.
Earlier last week, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Australian production of Matilda The Musical received a record 13 2016 Helpmann Award nominations, including one for Tim Minchin for Best Original Score.
Matilda The Musical is based on the beloved novel by best-selling author Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr. Fox). It is the story of an extraordinary girl, who armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny.
Having proven an enormous success internationally, where productions continue to play to packed houses and capture the imagination of young and old alike, Matilda The Musical opened to unqualified rave reviews in Sydney last year. The Daily Review described the production as “nothing short of a miracle”. The Australian said the show “makes you want to punch the air with delight.” and Time Out Sydney pronounced the show “a freaking masterpiece.”
Matilda The Musical will run from 20 May 2017 at the Festival Theatre with the 2017 Adelaide Cabaret Festival running from 9 til 24 June.
