McGregor & Young Distillery, founded by mates Scott McGregor and Chris Young, has a brand-new distillery door opening soon in the heart of Port Adelaide. Specialising in gin, the duo is passionate about creating unique and flavourful spirits, and have been working hard at it for the past six years.
While Scott and Chris are now both entirely focused on McGregor & Young Distillery, they’ve each come from different backgrounds. Chris is an electrician and Scott is in the Air Force, which led to time spent away from South Australia. Their journey into the world of spirits began in 2017 during a trip through Europe, where they were inspired by the cocktail culture.
“We were going to a lot of cocktail bars, and had some great experiences, and decided we wanted to get involved with that sort of scene,” Chris says.
In the beginning, they considered opening a cocktail bar, whether that be here in Australia or overseas, but ultimately, they decided to start a distillery instead.
Currently, McGregor & Young offers three distinct gins. The first, Temperance, was launched last year, while their second gin known as Misery was released in June of this year (although the name may change in the future).
Their third offering is a fun series called the Hydra Series, with the first release called Pineapple Reaper. Chris describes this series as an opportunity to experiment with non-traditional styles: “It’s a bit more of a fun series because it gives us a license to muck around.”
After six years of hard work, they are excited to finally be opening their own distillery in Port Adelaide. They always envisioned being in that area, believing it’s on the brink of a boom, with many new businesses moving in. This new distillery door location is the first that felt right after five years of searching.
The distillery will feature a spacious warehouse for production, alongside a distillery door that includes a tasting room. Visitors can enjoy tastings at a bar setup, and there’s an area out back planned for live events and gatherings. The distillery will also offer food with tastings, like finger food and platters, with the hope to one day level their offerings as the business grows.
Chris believes that being in Port Adelaide will contribute significantly to their success, as most gin distilleries are throughout the Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and the Barossa. With their new distillery door opening soon, Scott and Chris are excited to continue growing their passion and business, inviting everyone to come and enjoy their gins in this fresh new location.
