McLaren Vale winery Battle of Bosworth won the Best Organic or Biodynamic Wine trophy at the Melbourne Royal Wine Awards for its 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon, adding to recent accolades, while other South Australian wineries also took home top prizes.

“What a couple of weeks for the Bosworth Wines team! Last week, three trophies at the McLaren Vale Wine Show. Today, a dream gong at the Melbourne Royal Wine Awards,” shared the Bosworth team to Facebook.

“Our organic journey is nearing it’s 30th birthday. As McLaren Vale Wine Region’s first organic winery, it is wonderful to know we are still forging the future for organic wine.”

The Melbourne Royal Wine Show was first introduced back in 1883. In the first edition of the competition there were just 13 entries. The awards have grown a bit since then, with 2,323 entries and 450 exhibitors in 2024.

This year Battle of Bosworth saw intense competition from fantastic wine makers all over the country, but came out on top for a number of accolades.

Alongside taking out the Major Trophy for Best Organic or Biodynamic Wine, Battle of Bosworth were awarded gold for its 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon in the Best Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 & Younger category, and for the Battle of Bosworth Heretic in the Other Red Blends 2023 & Younger. The Heretic is a super blend of Touriga, Mataro, Graciano and Shiraz.

In addition Battle of Bosworth’s 2023 Shiraz was awarded silver, and the 2024 Puritan Shiraz ‘Preservative Free’ and its Best of Vintage, 2023 Shiraz, were awarded bronze in its respective categories.

Battle of Bosworth was established by Joch Bosworth and Louise Hemsley-Smith in 2001 as the first organic winery in the McLaren Vale region. These organically grown grapes come from Joch’s family’s vineyards which were planted in the 1970s. The vines have been organically grown and certified since 1995.

This year’s Trophy Presentation Lunch was held at the Victoria Pavilion at the Melbourne Showgrounds. Amongst the trophy winners five other SA wines were awarded. These include Best Riesling won by
Kirrihill Wines from the Clare Valley, Best Rosé won by Lovegview Vineyard in the Adelaide Hills, Best Sauvignon Blanc won by Petaluma in the Adelaide Hills, Best Grenache won by Willunga 100 in McLaren Vale and Best Red Blend won by Bleasdale Vineyards in Langhorne Creek.
