McLaren Vale Grenache crowned world’s best at Master Winemakers Top 100 in Paris

Gemtree Wine’s Chief Winemaker, Mike Brown, clinched the prestigious title of “Best Grenache” at the Master Winemakers Top 100.

Gemtree Wines has once again raised the bar in the world of winemaking. Its Chief Winemaker, Mike Brown, has clinched the prestigious title of “Best Grenache” for Gemtree’s 2021 Cinnabar GSM at the Master Winemakers Top 100.

Located in McLaren Vale, Gemtree Wines has long been known for crafting fine wines.

“We are thrilled and honoured to receive this recognition for our Cinnabar GSM. It is a testament to our commitment to quality and innovation in winemaking,” Mike Brown says.

Crafted as a seamless blend of McLaren Vale’s best-known varieties—Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro—Gemtree’s Cinnabar GSM dazzles with its bright and lively character, bursting with delicious cherry and plum flavors. This triumphant achievement is a reflection of Gemtree’s dedication to producing wines of unparalleled taste and complexity.

The 2024 Master Winemaker 100 report, unveiled at VinExpo Paris, serves as a testament to the expertise and craftsmanship of the world’s top winemakers.

The rigorous selection process, involving blind tastings by expert judges, including Masters of Wine, ensures that only the finest wines are recognised. Gemtree’s victory in this esteemed competition underscores its position as a leader in the global wine industry.

This latest accolade adds to Gemtree’s impressive collection of awards for its Grenache wines.

In 2023, Gemtree’s Grenache claimed the trophy for the Best Grenache and the Best Organic and Biodynamic wine at the Melbourne Royal Wine Awards. Additionally, the wine garnered four gold medals from four other national wine shows.

Gemtree’s commitment to sustainability and organic winemaking practices has also been widely recognised.

The winery’s McLaren Vale Tasting Room, where trophies and gold medals proudly reside, recently received the prestigious award for Best Sustainable Wine Tourism practices in South Australia—for the fourth time no less.

Other South Australian winners in the ‘Top 100 Master Winemakers’ list for 2023 include names such as David Norman from Gatt Wines, Kym Milne MW from Golden Amrita, Paul Lindner of Langmeil, Tim Pelquest-Hunt from Orlando Wines, Scott Hazeldine of Schild Estate, and Adam Eggins from Wakefield Wines/Taylors Wines, and Jeremy Ottawa from Château Tanunda.

These winemakers, through their innovative practices and dedication to quality, have not only elevated the profile of South Australian wine on the global stage but have also showcased the diverse and rich winemaking heritage of the region.
