IMG_0001[1] As part of the MRC’s commitment to providing the best in independent film and innovative events, the organisation will present four major film events over the next two months – starting with An Evening with Deane Taylor at 7pm on Friday 29 October. Fresh from the hit ACMI retrospective, Tim Burton: The Exhibition, join The Nightmare Before Christmas Art Director Deane Taylor as he shares his unique experience working on this classic Burton film as well as a 30 year career on the animation world stage. An absolute must for anyone with an interest in film-making, animation or just plain old lovers of the creative process, make sure you book your tickets soon as this is sure to sell out. The Screening Room will present its second installment at 7pm on Wednesday 3 November. BANANAS!* is a suspenseful, layer-peeling, court room drama chronicle contextualised within the global politics of food and First vs. Third world dynamics. The film focuses on a slippery fact trail and a landmark and highly controversial legal case pitting a dozen Nicaraguan plantation workers against Dole Food Corporation and its alleged usage of a deadly banned pesticide and its probable link to generations of sterilized workers. The screening will be followed by a live video link Q&A with the director, Fredrik Gertten. Get Hammered! A Guide to Hammer Horror from 1-11 November. Hammer Studios, founded in 1934, made its indelible mark on film history with a series of Gothic Horror films spanning the mid-fifties to the mid-seventies. Lavish sets, lurid lighting, heaving bosoms and copious gore for the era set them apart and made them substantial hits on both sides of the Atlantic. Following will be Artists on Artists from 15-25 November. These films, by artists Jackson Pollock, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Caravaggio and Francis Bacon, often working with limited budgets, succeed in illuminating the creative spirit and times of some of the most influential artists in contemporary art and art-practice. Hola Mexico Film Festival, will blaze into Adelaide from 12-21 November. Fresh from its US tour of LA, San Francisco, Miami, Chicago, Washington and New York, the rich and raw 2010 line up will present new-release feature films, documentaries, and a tribute to one of the greatest minds behind Mexican new wave cinema and winner of Cannes Palme d’Or, director Carlos Carrera. Adelaide will kick off its Hola Mexico Film Festival on Friday 12 November, 7pm, with the SA premiere of Alamar, the poetic story of a young boy who is taught about his Mayan origins in Mexico. The screening will be followed by the Sol Opening Night Fiesta where DJ Senorita of La Bomba will bring Mexican beats to the party while guests enjoy Sol Cerveza beer and Mexican canapés amid a colourful fiesta foyer.
