Media Release: ‘Liberals will deliver on Early Childhood Development’

liberal saMEDIA RELEASE: David Pisoni MP, Shadow Minister for Education, Employment, Training & Further Education and Early Childhood Development

March 1st 2010

Mike Rann – the self proclaimed ‘Education Premier’ – has failed to deliver key promises on early childhood education and now he is asking South Australians to trust him again.

Over the last four years the Premier has promised 20 early childhood centres but has only delivered eight.

Then, on day one of the State Election campaign, Mike Rann promised another 10 children’s centres.

Releasing the Liberals’ Early Childhood Development policy, Shadow Minister David Pisoni said a Redmond Liberal Government will give South Australians a realistic timeframe for the completion of the remaining 12 centres.

“These centres were supposed to be completed by 2010 and now that he hasn’t been able to deliver on his promise, Mike Rann is trying to divert attention by announcing another 10 centres,” Mr Pisoni said.

“Rather than spin the Liberals’ focus for Early Childhood Development will be on what is in the best interests of children.

“As well as establishing a timeframe for the delivery of the children’s centres, a Redmond Liberal Government will improve services accessed by parents.

“We will do this by better coordination of home visits to new mothers, focusing specifically on those identified as high risk.

“The Liberals will also review the relationship between the Department of Education & Children’s Services and Families & Communities to improve cooperation so more can be done to keep our children safe.

“Too often we hear about tragedies that could have been prevented if these Government Departments had coordinated better.“
