Meet the South Australian label solving fashion faux-pas

Created by two Adelaide friends, The Basic Band is the newest nifty invention helping women easily alter the look of their clothing.

South Australians. We’re an innovative bunch. Countless inventions have been thought up right here including the Hills Hoist and a little life-saving thing called Penicillin. And now, our very own have struck again with the creation of a world-first fashion accessory you never knew you needed.

The brainchild of two local girls, The Basic Band was created as a solution to a problem that most women know far too well. Sharing clothes is something girls do best but as our bodies are all so beautifully unique, it often means other people’s clothes don’t fit the way we want them to. The Basic Band allows you to alter the fit of dresses, tops and jumpers by tucking or cinching into the band.

After moving in together, owners Dani and Nicole first made the band in order for them to share each other’s clothes after realising their different body shapes meant clothes didn’t sit right.

“We were constantly borrowing each other’s clothes but we have totally different body shapes so we were always looking for ways to alter them,” said co-owner Dani.

“It got to the point where we were cutting our tops to fit before we thought that there had to be a better way.”

They may have created The Basic Band for themselves but soon realised it was a creation that needed to be shared with the world.

Worn underneath your clothing, the band works by holding clothing in your desired position and allows the wearer to alter the appearance of an item of clothing, meaning you can create multiple looks with a single garment – turn tops into crops or give some structure to a flowy dress.

Wrapping around your waist, the bra-strap like clasp was developed after feedback from their initial design told them customers wanted a more inclusive size range.

“We want our brand to be inclusive so we absolutely took on the feedback,” co-owner Dani said.

“We now have a range of sizes from 4 – 24 and the adjustable back allows it to be used for bulkier items without compromising on hold.”

No stranger to the fashion industry, Nicole is the designer behind SA fashion label The Lost Tribe. After spending her childhood watching her grandmothers who were both dressmakers, she fell in love with the art form and eventually created her own label.

In fact, it was Nicole’s grandmother who sewed together the first prototype of The Basic Band for the girls when they first came up with the idea and needed one ASAP to share between them.

After launching the product in November 2021, The Basic Band burst onto the scene in a big way after going viral on Tik-Tok and now has stockists around Australia. Retailing at $36.95, this nifty little invention is the item you never knew you needed and now won’t be able to live without.

Gone are the days of tucking your shirt into your bra and TBH we can’t believe someone didn’t think of this sooner.
