This is the latest animated film produced by DreamWorks and available in 2D and 3D format.  Set on Earth Megamind (will Ferrell) is a super intelligent alien and villainous arch rival to the peoples hero Metro Man (Brad Pitt).  Jealous of all the accolades Metro Man receives, Megamind plots to finally destroy him by kidnapping reporter Roxanne Ritchi (Tina Fey) to lure him into a trap. It works and Megamind takes over control of Metro City with the help of his sidekick, Minion (David Cross).  However Megamind missing the competitive rivalry, seeks to find a solution to fill this void.  Under the disguise of museum curator “Bernard”, Megamind befriends Roxanne who inspires him to discover a way of using Metro Man’s DNA to create another superhero.  Meanwhile Roxanne, unaware of the deception, is hot on Megamind’s trail and discovers his hideout with her cameraman Hal (Jonah Hill) in tow.  In the ensuing battle Hal inadvertently gets shot with the DNA sample.  Megamind as “Bernard” embarks on a romance with Roxanne, but once she discovers his ruse, he is publicly spurned.  With renewed determination Megamind trains Hal to become his rival superhero “Titan” but things don’t go according to his diabolical plan.

While the script might not be entirely original, with comparisons to Despicable Me and The Incredibles but it doesn’t matter when it’s done in such an entertaining way.  The characters are just brilliant from the fiendish but misunderstood Will Ferrell , to the smart and sassy Tina Fey and the unrequited dopey Jonah Hill.  The script creates real sympathy for the characters and likeability even for the antiheroes.  Will Ferrell is superb as Megamind in this over the top meglomanical performance but with a heart.  This is definitely one more for the adults than the kids with the clever one liners, which will be incomprehensible to most children.  However the pure 3D alien animation experience should be enough to keep them entertained throughout this 95 minute flick.  The expressiveness in the characters reactions, particularly Megamind are sublime and such a credit to the animation team.  It also works well in the 3D format.  Highly entertaining feel good film, definitely a must for the school holidays
