Join Mercato to celebrate a day where Australian-Italian families come together to participate in the sacred ceremony of turning tomatoes in their prime into a delicious homemade sauce, is your mouth watering yet?
Mercato is hosting their popular guided passata-making day where you are invited to come along and learn the rich history of passata-making surrounded by generations of Mercato who are ready to turn you into a passata-making expert.
Managing Director of Mercato, John Caporaso, expects the day to be hit with his family and friends aiding in teaching guests how to make their own Passata and Pelati using the freshest and ripest locally grown Roma Tomatoes. Then, share in a family feast with fresh pasta covered in the guests’ own homemade sauce.
“As a business that is determined to share the best of Italy and as a person who has grown up in an Italian family where passata-making days were a tradition, it’s really exciting to be able to share this expression of tradition with the community,”.
Guests can expect to be involved in the entire process of passata making, from the slicing, boiling and bottling, you will have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of this time-honoured tradition. This is the perfect experience for those who don’t have Italian roots and want to explore their inner foodie.
“The process will be the real deal, going through the slicing stages of the fresh tomatoes right through to enjoying the end result with an end-of-day lunch consisting of a plate of pasta with the sauce you made on the day, accompanied by some beautiful wine to top off a fantastic experience,”.
An outdoor production will await you as you’re split into groups with a guide who is dedicated to sharing with you the tips and tricks of the trade, while rotating between positions not only will you learn how to perfect passata-making, but you will also learn about the history the tradition.
“Guests can look forward to meeting the founding generation of Mercato who will be hosting the event and taking you through the same process that has been used by our ancestors for generations, nothing has changed!”.
The tickets include access to an interactive passata-making masterclass, a shared menu by Nick Bergin with matched wines, goodie bags to take home including your own passata and 10% off retail purchases on the day.
