2020 was a devastating year for many hospitality businesses in Adelaide, with snap lockdowns and work from home orders draining loyal customer bases, particularly for deserted CBD venues.

Mister Pigeon, the Gilles Street toastie emporium, were one of the lucky new ventures to survive 2020, and are giving back to celebrate their survival by hosting a generous charity initiative each month.

For each customer’s Facebook check-in, Google review or Instagram tag at Mister Pigeon, the café will be donating $1 to their monthly charity of choice, with July’s selection named as local charity Autism SA, who will be using Mister Pigeon’s donations for South Australians with autism and their families.

The initiative began at the start of 2021, with the Mister Pigeon team looking to give back to the local community that kept their business alive during the pandemic, with each charity selection informed by the cafés staff members and nominations by the venue’s social media followers.

Previously chosen charities include Victorian LGBTQ+ charity Minus18, which was selected for June’s Pride Month, World Vision and Guide Dogs Australia, who have since contacted the Mister Pigeon team to express their gratitude for the much appreciated donation to their cause.

The café are hoping to increase their donations each month as the initiative continues and more customers become aware of the cause.

Owner Callum Dinnison renovated the stunning 1870 Gilles Street building to create a welcoming, homely feel to the café, that has gone from strength to strength since its opening, becoming a firm favourite with its fun weekly toastie specials, as voted for by the venue’s loyal Instagram followers, which will set you back $13.

Previous toastie flavours such as the gyros toastie and butter chicken toastie have been a huge hit with customers, with this week’s flavour ‘Salami Get This Straight’ sure to delight pizza lovers looking for a warming toastie fix for their lunch, featuring Hungarian salami, red bell peppers, black olives, tomato chutney, mozzarella and oregano on toasted Rustico bread.

Tucked away underneath a beautiful historic façade on Gilles Street, Mister Pigeon boasts a relaxed, retro vibe with the café walls decorated with a selection of colourful, vintage records.

The venue has built up a cult following amongst its community with its welcoming corner-store vibes and fun Friday night events once a month, such as Kath and Kim quiz nights always proving popular with patrons.

Offering a full breakfast menu and a selection of home-made cakes, pop in to Mister Pigeon for a warming winter toastie and tag your visit on social media, to donate to an incredible Australian charity.
