Menu testing is an intrinsically important part of working at Glam Adelaide… When we menu test, we write a review and a review means giving you the goods on where to eat in Adelaide. We recently did some menu testing at one of Adelaide’s favourite cafés, Mister Sunshine’s in Thebarton, and have we got a review for you!
Now, we realise that Mister Sunshine’s isn’t a new café that has just opened. In fact it actually reopened after changing owners back in July 2014 (we even did a story on it here). But no matter, a menu is there to try and try we did!
So much cuteness.
When we arrived the place was buzzing. For a café to be at capacity on a Wednesday, at lunchtime, you are sort of left with very high expectations. We did have to wait about ten minutes for a table, but we weren’t bothered. With comfy stools to sit on and the staff ensuring that we had coffees on hand, the wait felt like no time at all.

Seated at our table, we had a chance to survey our surroundings… Quirky, a little bit of a 70s vibe, with retro seats, lamps and the cutest teacups ever! It was duly noted, though, that the whole vibe wasn’t over done – just right.

After a busy morning in the office, we were all pretty ravenous. Hey, a girl has gotta eat! So without hesitation we ordered four meals for three of us with the intention of sharing one meal that we all wanted to try, the minced mushrooms on rye sourdough toast with poached eggs and blanched spinach. The waiter taking our order did give us a look of ‘really’? And mentioned that we might want to be prepared to feel full. We laughed – oh no, we can handle it!
Little did we know that at Mister Sunshine’s they do NOT skimp on anything! With an all day breakfast menu (hallelujah), I couldn’t go past my favourite of poached eggs on rye with spinach. The other two Glam girls opted for some deliciousness from the lunch menu – smashed pumpkin on rye with feta, toasted seed, rocket and almonds and chicken salad with sweet pumpkin and couscous salad.

Our eyes were certainly bigger than our stomachs because, try though we did, we could not finish everything. One thing that should make any diner happy is the serving sizes VS the cost of the meals. Now there is pretty much nothing worse than eating out somewhere and feeling like you aren’t getting your money’s worth. That most certainly will not be the case when you eat at Mister Sunshine’s.
They do take away too!
Getting to the most important thing – the food. Well, along with the fact that the meals were generously portioned, they were also absolutely delicious. My eggs, perfectly poached. The spinach, so tasty. The hot chocolate I ordered to warm up my insides, absolutely spot on. I also dabbled in some of the minced mushrooms and my word… mushroom lovers rejoice! This one will not disappoint. I was left with one word to describe the food… tasty. Just so darn tasty!
The evaluation from next to me and across the table wasn’t much different. The chicken salad was fresh, warm and yummy. The pumpkin, so generous and a delicious mix of sweet from the pumpkin and salty from the feta.

Before we end this review, it must be said that the service was truly amazing. Helpful and attentive but never annoying, quirky and happy, all the while making you feel very comfortable and at home. Eddie and his wife Prue certainly have a fantastic team who have the art of customer service perfected.

Now without sounding too over the top, our experience left us with absolutely nothing to fault. The service, staff, food, drinks, atmosphere, menu price – ten out of ten.
Also another thing to note is that Mister Sunshine’s are happy to accommodate for vegetarians, vegans and the gluten intolerant!
Mister Sunshine’s is all encompassing of that perfectly suited title. From the cheerful yellow door, to the warm and friendly staff and the food that will certainly leave you feeling warm and bright – Mister Sunshine’s really is a ray of sunshine (especially on the cold winter’s day that we visited).
