Favourite Adelaide brunch spot, Mister Sunshine’s announced last September that they would not only be expanding their café space but also transforming the abandoned park adjacent to them into a community hub!

Owner Lauro Martire had big visions to expand their venue space and make better use of the nearby abandoned park.

The park is now almost complete, with a basketball court, rock climbing, nature walks for the kids and two meeting spaces to hang out and relax.

However, the park still needs a name. Mister Sunshine’s is determined to name the park using traditional Kaurna language, in an act of reconciliation.

Lauro was critical in respectfully communicating with Kaurna Warra Karrpanthi (KWK), a group dedicated to revitalising Kaurna language. KWK have culturally consented to naming the park a traditional Kaurna name, ‘Inparri Wama’ meaning ‘Meeting park’”.

The culturally consented and certified name has been given to the West Torrens Council, yet has not been successful with their attempt at revitalising Kaurna language to support First Nations People.

Mister Sunshine’s believes that all councils should have a Reconciliation Action Plan to take steps towards “showing respect, recognition, actionable steps and implementing policies”, in support of Aboriginal Communities.

With the support of the community, Lauro has started a PETITION to have this space officially named ‘Inparri Wama’ and show the West Torrens Council that customers and locals want Kaurna language as part of their community.

Through this petition, the Mister Sunshine’s team is hoping to gain 500+ signatures to enact a monumental recognition of Kaurna people, as custodians of the Adelaide regions.

Mister Sunshine’s has assisted in transforming a previously derelict space into a bustling and crucial park for locals and families alike – hundreds of commuters also pass through this area daily.

Alongside the community they have enacted important change, however, Lauro feels that a “space is pointless if it doesn’t have significance or is not reflected by a [suitable] name”.

Mister Sunshine’s is located at 32 George St, Thebarton South Australia.
