It’s finally summer, and that means one thing – fun day trips and long afternoons lounging around at South Australian cellar doors soaking up great food, wine, and immaculate scenery.
One picturesque location to put on your list where the vines stretch as far as the eye can see is Mitolo Winery in Mclaren Vale, which stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Italian-Australian viticulture.
Rooted in the Abruzzo region of Italy, the Mitolo family transplanted their passion for the land and agriculture to the sun-soaked soils of Australia in the 1950s. Here, they’ve not only managed to craft wines of remarkable character, but create a whole space perfect for a ‘day out’ no matter what you want that to look like.
In 2017, Mitolo Wines unveiled its McLaren Vale Cellar Door and Osteria, offering visitors an immersive experience amid the lush vineyards, nestled alongside Turraparri Creek, with sweeping views of the majestic Mount Lofty Ranges.
It’s here, housed in reused shipping containers with stunning modern architecture, that you can enjoy various tasting experiences which are designed to provide a deep dive into the world of Mitolo’s wines.
In the year 2000, Mitolo took its first steps into the world of winemaking, producing its inaugural Shiraz, followed by its first Cabernet Sauvignon two years later. Now it’s got a whole range for every occasion.
“We have our small batch wines, which are perfect for everyday enjoyment. You can taste six wines side by side, two at a time, at your own pace,” Director at Mitolo Kirsty Marie notes.
“For those who prefer a deeper dive into our portfolio, our Classic Series Tasting focuses on our foundational wines, showcasing the unique terroirs of our vineyards. And then there’s the Masterclass, a more immersive experience where you can explore back vintages alongside a selection of small plates.”
As the summer season kicks off, Mitolo Winery is ready to become an even more enticing destination.
“We offer a broad range of options, from wine tastings on the beautiful deck with stunning views to a delightful selection of summer wines like sparklings, Vermentino, Rosé, and a forthcoming Prosecco early next year,” Kirsty Marie shares.
What sets Mitolo apart from other cellar doors is its ability to offer a diverse array of experiences all in one place. Guests are encouraged to extend their stay beyond wine tasting, making the most of their visit by indulging in a delightful lunch at one of Mitolo’s two restaurants – Frankie or Little Wolf.
Little Wolf, in particular, has become a beloved addition to the Mitolo experience – it has a focus on house made, house grown, and locally sourced produce.
“Little Wolf offers vibrant, fresh, and unpretentious dishes. It’s a celebration of authentic flavours with no tricks – just delicious, honest food. The level of service is top-notch, creating an approachable yet elevated atmosphere.”
Some highlights from the seasonal shared menu include Spoja Lorda ricotta filled sheets with nutmeg and brodo di formaggio, Costoletta pork ribeye cutlet with lightly crumbed fresh peperoncino and garden herbs and a delicious Aragosta ½ southern rock lobster with finger lime and caviar sauce.
Mitolo’s commitment to Italian hospitality shines through in every aspect of their offerings.
“We’re all about providing a warm welcome to our guests. It’s about those little extras – the snacks, the attention to detail, the unexpected touches – that make you feel special and well-cared for,” she explains.
“You can do a little bit of everything in one day at Mitolo. Whether it’s a big family birthday celebration at Frankie, a quiet lunch at Little Wolf, or a wine tasting experience, we offer a diverse range of options. Plus, we’re one of the few venues where you can simply drop in for a drink and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.”
Adding to the appeal, you can enjoy Sundays at Frankies with a DJ, pizza and a relaxed atmosphere.
Mitolo Winery stands out as a versatile destination, offering diverse experiences all under one roof.
