Husani’s four cute cubs are growing fast and beginning to find their paws!
Keepers have been monitoring the fluffy felines closely through the den cam and have reported the little ones are becoming more and more confident day by day.
The cubs spend most of their time filling their tummies with milk or having a cat nap snuggled up with mum.
Senior Keeper of Carnivores, Jon Allon, said Husani is doing a great job and has now started to leave the cubs for short periods each day to go out on exhibit with the rest of the pride.
“She really has been a great mum and is now leaving the cubs to see the rest of the pride for a couple of hours a day,” she said.
“She wanders casually back down to the night yards when she’s ready and the keepers let her back in.
“The four lion cubs are going well, they have fat little tummies, their eyes are open and they are starting to chew playfully on each other.”
Sadly, last week Monarto Safari Park announced one of Husani’s lion cubs had to be humanely euthanised after the young male was not feeding or moving around the den like his siblings.
The other four cubs are in good health and have been feeding and progressing well.
At six weeks they will receive their first health check, where keepers will be able to determine their sex.
The adorable additions are the next generation of Monarto Safari Park’s breeding program, with Husani herself born at the park in 2013.
The birth of any animal is a precious gift, particularly at Zoos SA where so many of our species are threatened with extinction.
Zoos SA followers are encouraged to ‘take pride in helping the Pride’ by supporting the lion cubs through adoption.
Lion adoption supports rangers patrolling the Sera Conservancy in Kenya and the partnership with the Painted Dog Conservation Inc supporting the Zambian Carnivore Program.
Adopters will receive an exclusive photograph of the newborn cubs taken in their den, and lion fact sheet.
Once ready to venture out beyond the den, the little ones will make their debut in the lion exhibit.
Zoos SA continue to provide regular updates and footage for the public to watch the cubs grow.
