More frequent, faster and better bus services are just around the corner, with the SA Government releasing details this morning about the new bus services for community feedback set to roll out later this year.
The improvements to the bus service network will deliver;
- 1089 more GoZone bus stops (up 66 per cent to a total of 2,730 GoZone bus stops);
- 200km more GoZone coverage (up 71 per cent to a total of 480 km); and,
- 45 GoZone corridors.
Detailed service improvements released for public feedback show almost 700,000 South Australians will now live within a GoZone and have access to better, faster and more frequent services.
The consultation period will run until 31 July 2020 ahead of implementing the improved bus timetables and routes from later this year.
“We are delivering a better bus network which will see more frequent, faster and more connected services that will benefit more South Australians than ever before,” said Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government.
“These proposed changes mean almost a quarter of a million more people will live within 800 metres of a Go Zone – that’s a massive boost in frequency for a lot of people.
“The number one issue for public transport users is frequency – they want more services, more often.
“That’s why we are also creating an extra 10 Go Zones and extending a further 20 Go Zones so people will have buses coming every 15 minutes or less during that period when previously they had to wait much longer.
“This is being achieved by simplifying routes, so more buses run more frequently down main and arterial roads and some buses spend less time weaving through side streets.
“By simplifying routes and increasing frequency, the vast majority of people will get into the city or home faster.
“As we said from the outset when we announced the new contract, some people may have to walk a couple of hundred metres further to their bus stop, but they will still have a faster journey and save time overall.
“We are seeking public feedback on these proposed improvements to bus services that will see better, faster and more frequent services.
“After awarding contracts to new service providers, the former Labor administration made changes to bus timetables and sought feedback afterwards – they put the cart before the horse.
“We want people to have their say on the proposed improvements to the network before they come into effect later this year.”
Other key aspects of the proposed service improvements include;
- Almost 700,000 people will now live within 800 metres of a Go Zone, increasing frequency for almost a quarter of a million people;
- 45 Go Zone corridors, an increase of 10 to deliver more frequent services;
- A further 20 of the 45 Go Zones have been extended increasing frequency for more people;
- First ever metropolitan On-Demand services in Seacombe Gardens/Seaview Downs, Blackwood, Le Fevre Peninsula and upgraded in Gawler;
- Faster journey times on various routes;
- Bus timetables designed to facilitate connections with train and tram networks;
- 30 cross-suburban/feeder connector routes plus local routes; and,
- Simplified route numbering.
