The Malinauskas Labor Government is actively addressing the housing crisis by rezoning 28 hectares of land in Kadina on the Yorke Peninsula. Located at Daddow Court and Abbott Drive in Kadina’s north-eastern fringe, this land has the potential to accommodate a minimum of 227 low-density allotments.
This rezoning initiative involves converting a small section of farming land, formerly utilised for crops, into a General Neighbourhood Zone. This strategic move aims to cater to the increasing population and housing demand in the northern region of the Yorke Peninsula, as outlined in the Yorke Peninsula Regional Land Use Framework which designates Kadina as the commercial and industrial hub.
Fraser Ellis MP, the Member for Narungga, along with the Copper Coast Council, supports this rezoning effort, which would expand the existing residential streets in the vicinity. Minister for Planning Nick Champion has approved the code amendment, enabling developers to proceed with the next planning phase for the site.
“There’s a real desire to increase the housing supply in growing areas of our state, including Kadina which is an important hub on the Yorke Peninsula,” Nick said.
“This privately led rezoning has the support of the Member for Narungga Fraser Ellis MP as well as the local council and will help the town grow in a considered and measured way.
“This rezoning extends the surrounding residential streets, transforming a small area of farming land into more than 200 low density homes on generous block sizes.
“As a Government, we are pulling every lever at our disposal to address the housing crisis and streamlining the planning process is an important way we can get more supply into the market as soon as possible.”
The proposed block size under the code amendment is 450m², allowing for the construction of family-sized homes with gardens. This size exceeds that of neighbouring developments, where allotments can be as small as 350m².
This initiative aligns with the Malinauskas Labor Government’s commitment to simplifying the code amendment process across both metropolitan and regional South Australia, as part of the A Better Housing Future initiative.
