More wet weather on the way as Adelaide braces for extensive rain

The BOM has predicted heavy rains and potential hail across South Australia over the next few days.

It’s been one of the wettest Augusts we’ve seen in years and it’s not looking like it’s going to slow down anytime soon.

According to Bureau of Meteorology, Adelaide is expected to be hit with up to 8mm of rain today and another 4mm tomorrow. They have also warned of potential hail as a cold front passes over the state.

Next week is also looking grim with 10mm expected for Monday adding to the rainfall for the month which has seen the more rainfall in the past two weeks than we have in the past three years for this time of year.

The weather is arriving just days after The Bureau announced the likely return of La Niña this Spring which is likely to affect most of the country.

La Niña refers to changes in sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean, with waters in the eastern Pacific being cooler than normal, and waters in the western tropical Pacific being warmer than normal. Trade winds strengthen, increasing the water moisture in the air, which usually brings rainfall to eastern and central Australia and a wetter start to the northern wet season.

The Bureau’s 3-month climate outlook shows a high chance of above average rainfall for most of the eastern two-thirds of the Australian mainland between September and November 2022. The outlook reflects a range of climate drivers including a negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) event and warmer than average waters around Australia.
