After a successful summer of serving South Australia’s finest rock lobster, the menu is changing at one of the state’s top Japanese restaurants, and this autumn calls for Moreton Bay Bugs, South Australian lamb backstrap and Muse Pure Wagyu 9+ sirloin.
Shiki will unveil its new autumn menu, 秋 or Aki, this March, with a seasonal offering that combines premium Australian produce with refined Japanese technique.
This season’s menu takes inspiration from the classical Japanese concept of 物の哀れ or mono no aware, loosely translating to an awareness of the fleeting nature of life and the beauty found in impermanence. In Japan, autumn is the season when this concept is felt most strongly, with bright reds and golds of maple leaves, cool air, softer light, and a quiet reflection as the year begins to wind down.
At Shiki, that sentiment is expressed through 秋の味覚 or Aki no Mikaku, meaning “the taste of autumn.” The menu is warm and earthy, with a subtle sweetness and rich umami, designed to feel layered and comforting, but still complex.

The star of the show is the Moreton Bay Bug. Wild-caught from Australia’s pristine waters and known for its sweet flesh and tender texture, it is prepared on the teppan grill to preserve its natural flavour. The crustacean features in Shiki’s flagship Mikado menu and will also be available à la carte.
South Australian lamb backstrap with mint sauce will also make its debut this autumn, bringing local produce with a Japanese twist. The Muse Pure Wagyu 9+ sirloin is another highlight not to be missed. It makes its return with abalone mushrooms, adding an earthy richness to the premium cut.

Dessert rounds out the autumnal menu, with chestnut and white chocolate mousse and apple cheesecake.
To perfectly pair with the experience, an extensive wine list complements the offering, alongside a selection of sake and Japanese spirits.

Located on North Terrace next to the River Torrens, Shiki has built its identity around the meaning of its name, “four seasons.” At Shiki, seasonality is central to the experience, with the talented chefs crafting each menu to reflect nature’s rhythms, using carefully sourced produce from across South Australia, Australia and Japan.
Shiki’s autumn menu launches Tuesday, March 17th, with bookings open now for you to reserve your place. For those looking to try something new and get in the spirit of the new season, Aki is just around the corner.
