The Mount Gambier Tennis Club (MGTC) has been given a major facelift after receiving a significant financial boost of $431,000 from the South Australian Government’s Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing (ORSR), through the ORSR Community Facilities Program.
Generously supported by the City of Mount Gambier, the project officially commenced in August-September of 2025 and was completed in January 2026, with the great unveiling of the Club’s redeveloped tennis and pickleball courts on February 26.
Showcasing a variety of upgrades, the redevelopment included four brand new tennis courts complete with floodlighting, two dedicated pickleball courts, two additional pickleball courts multi-lined on an existing tennis court, new perimeter fencing across the lower facility, and installation of the Tennis Australia Venue Access System, with the improved facilities aiding in the expansion the Club’s programming and benefiting the community as a whole.
Rhiannon Pearce, Minister for Sport, Recreation and Racing, notes the importance of community sport in South Australia’s regional communities, having grown up in Telowie in the Mid North. “Sporting clubs need good quality infrastructure to attract and maintain players and supporters and I’m really pleased to see this transformation of the Mount Gambier Tennis Club,” says Ms Pearce.
Attending the official opening and echoing Ms Pearce’s sentiments, Clare Scriven, Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, highlights the positive impact the project will have on the community.
“This redevelopment highlights the Malinauskas Government’s commitment to grassroots regional sport and ensures clubs like Mount Gambier Tennis Club can continue to play their important role in the community,” says Ms Scriven.
“Projects like the upgrade of the MGTC deliver far-reaching benefits, supporting healthier lifestyles while strengthening social connections and sense of community. The new courts and lighting mean more players can enjoy all the benefits of having a hit and spending time with friends and other community members,” she adds.
Hot on the cards for the MGTC’s future will be weekly pickleball sessions, with big plans to expand the Club’s current programs, and, in the coming months, a regional wheelchair tennis cohort. Operating in the current Mount Gambier site since 1904, the project provides welcome upgrades that will support the Club and the local community for years to come.
