Adelaide Youth Orchestra will scale new heights in June, teaming up with some of South Australia’s best young opera singers to present the first staged opera concert in the orchestra’s history.
The second in AdYO’s popular Maestro series of concerts, Maestro Series 2: Passion on Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, June 28, will see the young orchestra accompany 12 talented singers from the State Opera of SA’s James and Diana Ramsay Foundation Program in a selection of classic operatic works, semi-staged with costumes and stage direction, to give audiences a small taste of the full opera experience.
Programmed and led by internationally renowned conductor Nicholas Braithwaite, the concert will feature excerpts from Mozart’s well-loved comedic opera “The Marriage of Figaro”, with award-winning singers Jeremy Tatchell (currently starring to critical acclaim in State Opera’s “Don Giovanni”) in the title role and Lisa Cannizzaro as his love, Susanna.
Also on the program are excerpts from Johann Strauss‘ “Die Fledermaus” and Richard Strauss‘ “Der Rosenkavalier”, highly technically demanding works never before attempted by AdYO, featuring talented singers including Hew Wagner, Desiree Frahn and Fiona McArdle.
Mr Braithwaite said the concert’s program was specially designed to introduce young musicians and audiences to the “undeniably powerful and passionate art form” of opera.
“If we can show young musicians and audiences what is available from opera we will be opening a treasure trove for them for the rest of their lives, one that can be a source of entertainment, moral debate, profound emotion, and a great adventure of the mind and spirit,” he said.
“The players are really excited by the opportunity of discovering and playing these pieces. The whole world of classical music is opening up to them and it is enormously exciting.”
Maestro Series 2: Passion will be AdYO’s first opera concert since 2008, and will mark the second time the orchestra has collaborated with Mr Braithwaite after a highly successful Maestro Series concert in 2013.
AdYO Artistic Director Keith Crellin said the concert was an important milestone for the orchestra.
“Never before has AdYO performed as part of a semi-staged opera production, with singers in costume and theatrical lighting and sets, so this is a real landmark concert for us,” he said.
“For our young musicians to work with such an experienced opera conductor as Nicholas Braithwaite and also with singers is very exciting, and a great opportunity for them to learn the subtle art of accompaniment, as well as gain a love of opera.”
The flagship of Adelaide Youth Orchestras’ four orchestras, AdYO comprises 80 of South Australia’s most talented young musicians, led by Artistic Director Keith Crellin. Hand-picked by annual audition, each AdYO member is tutored by professional musicians from the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the SA Police Band and the Elder Conservatorium of Music at The University of Adelaide to nurture their love of orchestra music and ensure performances of the highest quality.
