It’s not often in the delicate world of winemaking that there’s a perfect alignment of the stars but that’s precisely what has happened at the celebrated Mt Lofty Ranges Vineyard – and the end result is the singularly spectacular S&G range of wines.
Described by owners Sharon Pearson and Garry Sweeney as “the pinnacle of our winemaking careers thus far”, the limited edition S&G range comprises a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir, both lovingly grown on the high slopes of the Lenswood-based winery, and a locally grown Shiraz.
Their release today also takes Sharon and Garry a significant step closer to their dream of positioning Mt Lofty Ranges Vineyard as a high end food and wine destination and follows the recent appointment of distinguished chef Matt Fitton as its head chef.
“When we purchased the vineyard in 2009, we knew it was a very special block of land, where we could apply our sustainable and minimal intervention philosophy to create some magnificent premium cool climate wines in an idyllic setting,” Garry said.
“We also instinctively felt the predominately sandy, clay loam with a rock base of quartz, sandstone and ironstone might one day produce something truly exceptional – and S&G stands as testament to that.
“It’s undoubtedly the most refined and elegant range of wines we’ve produced at Mt Lofty Ranges Vineyard, boasting distinctive fruit flavours and a mineral crispness injected by the soil’s complex characteristics and best savoured on the most momentous of occasions.”
As Sharon recalled, S&G is the culmination of their six-year dream to create the perfect drop, and one they’d happily put their names on the bottle.
“We weren’t quite ready in 2010, the crop wasn’t good enough in 2011, and both 2012 and 2013 were low yielding years,” Sharon said.
“Then in 2014, the stars aligned and S&G was born, its initials celebrating our devotion and dedication to excellence.
“S&G also sends out a strong message that the Adelaide Hills can and does produce world-class wines and its unveiling, along with the introduction of our new menu, will go a long way towards drawing people to a side of the Adelaide Hills rich with untapped opportunity and offering a unique tourism, wine and dining experience.
“The setting is stunningly beautiful, S&G and our other award-winning wines are among the best in the country, the ambience is really special and our food is very much local, with all dishes created by two of South Australia’s finest young chefs.”
Just 50 dozen individually numbered bottles of each of the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz have been produced and are exclusively available, all at $85 per bottle, from Mt Lofty Ranges Vineyard’s cellar door.
