Mulatu Astatke with Black Jesus Experience

78484294One of Ethiopia’s most influential and legendary musicians, Mulatu Astatke, is coming to Adelaide for the first time for a special one night only performance on Thursday 21st October with Melbourne and Ethiopian ensemble, the Black Jesus Experience.

After receiving rave reviews at the 2010 Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Astatke and the Black Jesus Experience will present an evening of jazz, funk, hip-hop and some intense vibraphone playing, at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Piano Bar.

Born in 1943, Astatke is an innovative musician, composer and arranger and is often described as the father of ‘Ethio-jazz’ – infectious music dating back to the 1960s that combines Latin jazz and early soul and funk with traditional Ethiopian harmony.

Black Jesus Experience are a dynamic Australian/Ethiopian 10 piece ensemble fusing traditional Ethiopian song with jazz, funk and hip hop. They last performed at Adelaide at WOMADelaide 2009 and have recently returned from a highly successful tour of Europe and Ethiopia.
