The Hans Heysen Foundation has received approval from the council of plans to build a state-of-the-art gallery at Heysen – The Cedars, in Hahndorf.
The new development, designed by SnØhetta, will include a purpose-built gallery and gift shop plus bushfire-safe storage for artworks.
Incorporating the surrounding natural landscape, the design will allow for an invigorated and immersive experience of the Heysen legacy – in particular the work of renowned artists Hans Heysen, and daughter Nora Heysen, whilst also featuring exhibitions of other Australian artists.

Hans Heysen is one of Australias best-known artists. He was an influential artist, one whose work was pivotal to the development of Australian landscape art in the 20th century.
“The Cedars is already one of the nation’s most significant artistic treasures and this new development will enhance its position as an Australian cultural icon,” Hans Heysen Foundation Chair, Mr James Sexton, says.
Through the Adelaide City Deal, the Australian Government has committed $9 million to the project which will complement the current heritage-listed, national award-winning cultural destination.
“Hans Heysen was one of Australia’s finest landscape painters, and well ahead of his time in his environmental conservation advocacy. The gallery will honour these passions and further enrich his and his daughter Nora Heysen’s artistic legacies, making The Cedars a must-see destination for national and international visitors,” Mr James Sexton says.
“This is a huge boon for cultural and historical tourism in South Australia and we extend a huge thank you to all who have worked together to make this to happen.”
Karre Krokene, SnØhetta Partner and its Australasia Managing Director commented that the new experience of The Cedars will cherish a deep connection to past, whilst revealing innovative and evocative experiences of landscape. The design is confident, authentic, and grounded in the character of the Heysen family.
Work on the new development is expected to commence in the coming months with the new gallery to be sited on the hillside above the original studios of Hans and Nora Heysen and the family’s historic home.
Together these spaces, old and new, will continue to inspire generations to come.
