Music Review: Pirie and Co. Social Club Opening

Descending from the cafe and beach volleyball area of Pirie Street, we arrived at Pirie and Co. Social Club which can be best summed up as a secret venue completely full of charm. Along the lines of a New York Dungeon Club with a classic romantic feel of a five-star hotel bar from the early twentieth-century, accentuated beautifully by candle light and museum worthy artwork, it sincerely felt like another world.

This whole event was somewhat reminiscent of the relatively watchable movie “Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist” for this writer and posse. For the ill-informed, this awkward rom-com involves Michael Cera’s band and for the most part, a desired young lady played by Kat Dennings running around New York city trying to find the secret venue where their collective favourite band “Where’s Fluffy” are playing a secret show. I should probably add that there definitely isn’t any film being released about my adventure finding this new venue, nor are there any celebrities of that nature present, but don’t let the lack of glitz and glam disappoint you, the best parts are yet to come.

This setup also allowed for a very diverse age range of attendees to this special occasion, ranging from the too fashionable hipsters in their early twenties whose fashion can be as confusing as their lingo, to that odd older gentleman who is in his sixties and courting your aunty or mum’s best friend. Although that probably reads as being detrimental, it is the very opposite and I can only admire and commend Pirie and Co. Social Club for their efforts, this is a fine establishment which in my opinion boosts Adelaide’s nightlife beautifully.

Fishing began the nights proceedings with their strange beats landing somewhere between a Sega Mega Drive game and a remix adventure presented as if there were an array of instruments being played, quite impressive really. This performance was a perfect initiation to the expanding crowd and it seemed like the word had got out about the event. When capacity had been practically achieved, Safia took the lack of stage (which in all honesty was perfectly intimate) and captivated the bustling audience with their atmospheric electro-pop, keep an eye out for this act, Cut Copy may have found a rival especially with the outstanding song Listen To Soul, Listen To Blues.

As this point it had reached quite the late hour and the anticipation for the headliner Elizabeth Rose was beyond indisputable, quite suiting considering it was now nearly impossible to see the musicians with full house present. However, if there were a headliner to suit this event better, it would be hard to find. Elizabeth Rose was outstanding in her delivery, with an electronic lounge feel on songs like Out Of Step to a more 80s pop-driven Is It Love? and her stunning soulful voice, she had enthralled the many in attendance, but also provided a beautiful soundtrack for this event. Her versatility and talent is without doubt one with a very bright future, maybe Flight Facilities could look to collaborate with Elizabeth Rose because she is easily in the same league as Owl Eyes, their current live performer.

Upon exiting the locale, this scribe could barely wipe the smile away and I was joined by countless others as this occasion had been one of the more special outings I have had in quite sometime. Without hesitation I will be returning to Pirie and Co. Social Club and to the readers I highly recommend you doing the same.
