Music SA Launches ‘Spot The SA Bands’ Competition During COVID-19

90 South Aussie bands are hidden in this Where’s Wally style poster – and if you can spot them all first, you’ll win a prize!

In the devastating mess of COVID-19, sometimes we just need a little fun and Music SA have done just that, by engaging local illustrator Owen Lindsay to create a ‘Where’s Wally’ of SA bands.

In one awesome illustration, you will find 90 (that’s right 90!) bands hidden behind cheeky puns and literal descriptive characters, and the first people to find the most names will win a block-mounted copy of the limited edition illustration.

“We just thought this would be a great opportunity to entertain folk at home who are currently self-isolating, as well as keeping SA music in the forefront of everyone’s mind,” says Music SA CEO, Lisa Bishop

“The collaboration with Owen has also been important, as visual artists and graphic designers all play an important role in the live music scene with poster designs, album covers, and branding; it’s all very relevant to putting on gigs in Adelaide.”

In these times, Adelaide musicians are turning to desperate measures to stay creative and keep audiences engaged. Live streaming and selling merchandise is great, but the options are still limited and it won’t be until live music venues are back and kicking that life will return to normal for our music community.

“South Australian musicians just can’t wait to get back out gigging in all their favourite venues,” Ms Bishop says. “And we know music lovers will be more than ready to get back out there to experience the best we have in live, local music.”

Which brings us to the added inclusion of Adelaide venues in the illustration. Amongst the 90 SA artists complied in this artwork, you will also be able to pick a few iconic South Aussie venues.

From the Thebarton Theatre to the Grace Emily, the inclusion of venues is hugely important, and Owen Lindsay has captured the life-blood of our live music scene within the backdrop of the illustration.

Owen has been an illustrator for the past 15 years, dedicated to local content and publications, and is thrilled to be part of this fun, local music focused competition.

“Over the years, I’ve done album covers and gig posters for a few local bands, as well drawing illos for several Adelaide magazines, including CityMag. This big, crazy illustration was a lot of fun to do, particularly coming up with some of the more convoluted references,” Owen says.

In response to this fantastic, collector’s item artwork, Music SA will be offering 10 people a block-mounted copy, signed by the talented illustrator, via an online competition on the Music SA website.

To snag a block-mount, you must list as many bands as possible, and the top ten entrants with the highest number of correct guesses will receive a fresh block-mount of this incredible poster.
