Music to the Eyes & Ears of SA Seniors

AdYO’s Senior Heroes Concert Series will see the organisation’s leading primary school aged string orchestra, the 60-piece Adelaide Youth Strings – as well soloists and chamber musicians from various AdYO ensembles – perform 50-minute sets of classical, popular and world music within various aged care facilities.

After trialling the initiative with a quartet performance at Southern Cross Care’s The Pines Lodge (North Plympton) in June, the series will officially commence with the Adelaide Youth Strings performing at the Resthaven aged care facility at Bellevue Heights on Saturday July 27.

“We’re delighted to be the principal partner of this inspirational new music initiative,” says Graham James, managing director at Alfred James Funeral Homes.

“Orchestral music has been an important part of the lives of many people residing in aged care facilities. Unfortunately, health or mobility issues impede the ability of many residents to travel and attend a concert in person. By bringing the musicians to these facilities, our senior heroes of the community can again enjoy a high-quality classical music performance by some of the state’s rising musical stars.”

Further Senior Heroes concerts are scheduled at aged care facilities throughout the second half of the year with more to be confirmed in the coming months. Current concerts include:

  • Lifestyle SA – Forest Place, Happy Valley
  • Helping Hand Residential Care Home, North Adelaide
  • Southern Cross Care, Lourdes Valley, Myrtle Bank
  • ECH Marten Village – Residential Care Centre, Largs North

Programs will be customised to the facility and could feature the full Adelaide Youth Strings orchestra or more intimate groups.

“This concert series is valuable on so many levels,” says the Adelaide Youth Orchestras Artistic Director, Associate Professor Keith Crellin OAM, noting however that all Senior Heroes Concerts are private events for aged care facility residents and not open to the public.

“A live orchestral performance can be a truly exhilarating and uplifting experience and I’m delighted that…we can provide the opportunity for aged care residents around Adelaide to be part of that once more. I also believe the Senior Heroes concert series will benefit our young players by giving them a chance to engage with older members of the community and, through music, pay homage to their lives and achievements.”
