Enter My Lover Cindi, the nightclub leading the way in Adelaide’s war on fast fashion with the return of their wildly popular Cindi’s Clothing Swap: Summer Edition.
The concept is the brainchild of My Lover Cindi’s co-owners Kate Toone and Rachel Hosking, who came up with the idea after watching a documentary on fast fashion and its environmental impact. Since then, they hold the ‘swaps’ every six months to encourage people to break up with fast fashion.
This weekend’s event is set to be one of their biggest, as everyone has had time to clear their wardrobe over the holiday season and make way for new threads.
My Lover Cindi was launched in early 2021, with the mission of creating a safe space for minority groups who are under-represented at many venues.
Toone and Hosking’s passion for inclusivity lies at the heart of their clothing swaps.
“For people who are experimenting with different gender presentations, it can be intimidating to go shopping so this is a great way for people to try stuff on in a supportive environment” Toone says.
“This event is like a giant slumber party where you’re swapping clothes with your friends.”
Cheap, mass-produced clothes are so last season. This swap is the perfect way to spend your Saturday or Sunday afternoons, if you ask me.
