MYTH

Building on her recent success at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, dancer and choreographer Erin Fowler presents her first full-length stage performance MYTH at Nexus Cabaret from August 24 – 27.

Conceived, choreographed and directed by Erin, MYTH also features Adelaide dancers Jessie Oshodi and Mikaila Roe.

In a tongue-in-cheek reference to the David Attenborough style of documentary, MYTH explores the many representations of the female ‘species’ and how women are often portrayed in ‘perfect’ and unattainable ways. Through theatrical and quirky movement, the dancers investigate these idealised images such as the ancient ‘goddess’, the cheerily content and domestic ‘housewife’, the dazzling ‘beauty’ with Barbie-like proportions, and, the ‘femme fatale’ with irresistible allure.

The performance questions whether the over-saturation of images of perfection inspire and satisfy us or, rather, cause feelings of insecurity, failure and despair. In MYTH Erin questions why these seemingly mythical images have such a hold on us. Will the 'myth' of perfection lead the female species along the path of self-destruction?

Erin has received strong support from a range of established professionals from the dance industry to bring her artistic vision to the stage. In addition to working with mentor Katrina Lazaroff (as part of the national youth mentoring program JUMP, facilitated in South Australia by Carclew Youth Arts), Erin was awarded a Helpmann Academy grant towards her current production of MYTH. Australian Dance Theatre, one of Australia’s leading contemporary dance companies, has also supported Erin through the provision of in-kind studio space.

She has also worked with Australia’s leading dance photographer, Chris Herzfeld, to create some stunning images for the work, which will be displayed, gallery-style, at Nexus Cabaret.

MYTH was first performed as a short work at the 2011 Adelaide Fringe Festival as part of a show titled Teahouse. This first development excited audiences and Teahouse enjoyed a sell-out season gaining a nomination for Best Dance in the Adelaide Fringe Awards. Erin was also nominated for the Festival Centre inSPACE: Development Award.
