Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology – National Science Week – is now underway, and there are still plenty of events being held across SA.
National Science Week aims to take science out of labs and universities and make it accessible and exciting to the general public, through a series of events and interactive experiences.
“Every week of the year our scientists work hard—to develop better health solutions for our families, to harness technologies which monitor our planet’s health from space, to focus on the innovation required to decarbonise our world, and more,” Chief Scientist for South Australia, Professor Caroline McMillen.
“National Science Week is the one week in the year when we can celebrate our scientists and their remarkable contributions.”
This year events are being held throughout regional and metropolitan South Australia, with a goal of appealing to both children and adults, science amateurs and seasoned professionals.
Celebrations started last weekend with sell-out ‘Science Alive!’ family exhibition at the Adelaide Showground.
There’s still plenty of opportunities for the public to participate in the National Science Week festivities, including:
- A Window on SAHMRI Tours – 18 August – South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) is inviting the public ‘inside the cheese grater’ to learn more about the life-changing medical research happening beyond the beautiful architecture.
- Co-exist: Aboriginal knowledges and culture in western science – 18 August – A panel discussion will explore how western culture and modern science can better appreciate the sophistication of the ancient sciences, wisdom and knowledge of the world’s oldest living culture.
- My Science Rulz, Your Science Droolz – 23 August – The Gov will be hosting a friendly debate between scientists of different disciplines – each making the case for why their field is the most impactful.
- Constellation: A trail of stories in light in regional South Australia – Until 31 August – Five regional towns will project colourful moving images onto silos and other iconic landmarks to explore future themes of science.
- SCINEMA International Science Film Festival Community Screening – Until 31 Aug – The Glenelg Library will be hosting a number of SCINEMA screenings – the largest science film festival in the southern hemisphere showcasing the best in science cinema from around the world.
