The National Broadband Network (NBN) is expanding in South Australia and throughout the country, with the aim to provide faster, more reliable internet access. Digital connectivity in 2024 has become increasingly essential for education, remote work, and business operations. The NBN’s upgrades promise substantial benefits for both urban and regional communities.
7NEWS reported that the upgrade will reach 145,000 more Australian homes and businesses, reaching a total of 9 million properties nationwide by the end of 2025. The upgrades will reach both metropolitan and regional areas in SA including the following suburbs.

- Athelstone
- Highbury
- Craigburn Farm
- Glen Osmond
- St Georges
- Port Pirie
- Waikerie
- Nuriootpa
The rollout requires fiber optic cable installation, bringing high-speed fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology to more homes and businesses. The expansion will see households and businesses across SA and Australia get fiber optic cable extensions from the street into the premises, replacing existing FTTC copper cables.
This initiative will enable more users to experience high-speed, secure internet. The network has experienced 99.96% uptime consistently since September 2023.
Nationally, the NBN is investing in a range of network upgrades, including satellite services to reach remote areas and fixed wireless improvements to ensure equitable access across the country. This expansion is part of a $4.5 billion commitment to future-proof Australia’s digital infrastructure.
Although the expansion is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025, homeowners and businesses can opt to wait until they are ready to connect to the network.
