Need Some Australia Day Weekend Ideas? Head Trackside…

You will be off and racing to one of these cracking events when you read what is planned!

Looking for something fun to do over the Australia Day weekend and Public Holiday? We think we may just have the answer… Considering that a day at the races is a much loved pastime for many Australians, it makes sense to spend the Australia Day weekend, and our national day, trackside.

The Murray Bridge Racing Club will host its Australia Day Races on Tuesday, January 26. An ideal family event, the kids will love the giant water slide (can we have a go?) and the young at heart can try an air-brush temporary tattoo.

Punters will no doubt flock to Morphettville on Saturday, January 23, while the Holcim Summer Cup in Mt Gambier on Sunday, January 24, ensures South-East residents don’t miss out on all of the racing action.

Further south, the Kangaroo Island Gourmet Gallop (see more here), also on Saturday, January 23, allows visitors and locals alike to sample some of the region’s top produce and indulge in a flutter at the same time.

Murray Bridge Racing Club Chairman Reg Nolan said the Australia Day Races was a relaxed affair.

“It’s great to see people come along with their Australia Day flags and combine the glamour that you usually associate with the races with a more laid-back feel,” Mr Nolan said.

“To see so many groups of friends and families just kicking back and enjoying themselves, it’s what Australia Day is all about.”

Kangaroo Island Racing Club President Roger Williams said the Gourmet Gallop will attract horses, trainers and jockeys from far and wide.

“They flock to Kangaroo Island both for this event and the Kangaroo Island Cup Carnival, which is held in February, so you can rest assured you’ll be seeing the very best talent on the track,” Mr Williams said.
