A new $2.9 million community square and play space has opened at West Beach, turning previously vacant land into a beachside destination. The Square at West Beach Parks, located along the coastal path between Glenelg and Henley Beach, is designed to bring people together, with a range of amenities such as a playground, butterfly garden, kiosk, BBQ area, and plenty of space for events like artisan markets and food festivals.

After 18 months of vacancy, the site has been reimagined with a combination of natural vegetation and coastal art. Among the cultural highlights are story poles and a sculpture of a blue-ringed octopus (Paitya Marawiti) by Kaurna/Ngarrindjeri artist Allan Sumner.

“The Square at West Beach Parks has been developed to be the heart of the West Beach Parks precinct and is an important part of our Master Plan,” West Beach Parks CEO Kate Anderso said.

“It is a unique community-focused space that not only gathers people together in nature but also links them to the many recreational, community and sporting facilities within our precinct that support healthy living.”

The development of The Square at West Beach Parks was made possible by West Beach Parks, with funding support from a $1.45 million State Government grant through the Planning and Development Fund. The space was officially opened to the public by Housing and Urban Development Minister, Nick Champion, on Friday December 13th.

“The Square is a great addition to West Beach Parks and provides a new public space on a beautiful
part of the metropolitan coastline,” Housing and Urban Development Minister Nick Champion said.

“It’s vital we continue to invest in public open spaces to ensure our communities remain liveable,
healthy, and sustainable.

“Spaces like this will encourage people to get outdoors and be active and will be popular with
young families.”
