The Albanese and Malinauskas Labor Governments announced collaborative efforts towards a new Housing Trust project in Camden Park, aiming to enhance public housing within the region. The plan includes developing a six-story apartment complex which will provide accommodation for 96 residents within its 48 two-bedroom units.
This new $23.72 million development project has secured full funding through the Albanese Federal Government’s $2 billion Social Housing Accelerator. The designated development zone, spanning 7,500 square metres at the junction of Anzac Highway and Cromer Street, previously hosted 48 two-storey Housing Trust dwellings which were deemed unsuitable for continued use. Over the past two years, residents of these former facilities have been systematically relocated, and the structures have been demolished.
“This redevelopment of Camden Park is another great example of the Albanese and Malinauskas Labor Governments partnering with the housing sector to build more homes for Australians who need them, where they need them,” remarked Clare O’Neil, the Federal Minister for Housing. She said the government continues to be committed to addressing housing challenges across South Australia and the nation, aiming to ease the process of securing stable accommodation.
Mark Butler, Member for Hindmarsh, noted, “The Camden Park Housing Trust block had become unliveable. We’re prioritising building more good quality homes for our community because more homes means more supply into the market.”
The upcoming Housing Trust apartments are seen as a vital component in the broader regeneration plans for Camden Park. By adopting higher density living configurations, the project allows room for future housing solutions that are currently under review by the State Government. Nick Champion, South Australia’s Minister for Housing and Urban Development, pointed out that the previous Housing Trust dwellings were unsuitable, adding that the proposed development will deliver much-needed housing stability for tenants. “This is an example of the State Government reviewing a strategic site to achieve higher density and more housing options,” Champion explained.
The upcoming residential complex will be located adjacent to a walking and bike path that weaves through the Council Reserve, with a bus stop conveniently situated just 100 metres away on Anzac Highway.
Authorities have plans to release the development application for public consultation in the near future. Should it receive the necessary approvals, construction of the new Housing Trust apartment block is slated for completion by 2027.
