A brand new, bigger Victor Harbor ambulance station will be built on a fit-for-purpose site to deliver better health care for the growing South Coast community.
The new $4.5 million station will replace the current Torrens Street station – a run-down three-bedroom home which paramedics have been using for 20 years.
The new site selected – at 44 Adelaide Road, Hayborough – will house the existing 24 Victor Harbor paramedics, as well as a new 24/7 12-paramedic crew set to start in November 2024.
The expanded build will accommodate the extra ambulances and staff and have enough space for future expansion.
The new site is at a central location with easy access to major roads and the ring road around Victor Harbor to improve response times across the South Coast.
SAAS confirmed a rebuild of the current Victor Harbor ambulance station on a much smaller site would fail to meet their needs – and building the new station on a brand new site would provide a greater level of service to the region’s growing, and aging, population.
Additionally, there will be a further 24 paramedics recruited in Goolwa and Strathalbyn to improve ambulance coverage across the Fleurieu Peninsula and support some of the busiest volunteer stations in the state. Â Â
“Given a significant growth in population and an ageing demographic, SAAS is experiencing an accelerated demand for services in Victor and surrounds – and the new station will deliver a larger fit-for-purpose facility for our hardworking team,” says SAAS Chief Executive Officer, Rob Elliott.
Â
“The site selected follows careful analysis to ensure that its location and size will adequately support SAAS and the South Coast community, and the new station is well placed to continue to support the community into the future.”
Construction of the new Victor Harbor ambulance station is expected to be complete by late 2025.
Victor Harbor is one of nine new ambulance stations or rebuilds and forms part of an overall $187.2 million investment in station infrastructure. Â
This is the second new plot of land secured by the Government after the new Norwood station was announced at the corner of Magill Road and Portrush Road.
