Coles will take a key role in the Market Square redevelopment project as the anchor tenant in the new $400 million specialty retail precinct. This significant partnership marks a comeback of Coles’ longstanding relationship with the area, having operated a store in the former Central Market Arcade since 1967.
Market Square is located next to the Adelaide Central Market and represents a major $400 million investment into revitalising Adelaide’s CBD. Coles will occupy a 1700 square metre space designed to offer innovations in shopping and a range of new features will be introduced aimed at enhancing the customer experience.
Matt Khoo, Managing Director at ICD Property stated, “We are incredibly excited to welcome Coles to
Market Square as the next chapter for their previous store that stood proudly since 1967 in the Central Market Arcade. Their unique approach to retail aligns perfectly with our vision of creating a dynamic precinct that celebrates South Australia’s food, culture, heritage and community. This milestone reflects our commitment to elevating the retail experience in South Australia.”
David Ivey, Coles State Leasing Manager SA said, “At Coles we are constantly evaluating our store network to ensure we are delivering the best shopping experience for our customers, and as part of that process we are excited about delivering a new supermarket as part of Market Square. The project
will create hundreds of local retail and construction jobs and we’ll be sure to keep the community informed as plans for this development progress.”
A key component of the Coles ethos for this new store is its commitment to local produce providers, aiming to support both the South Australian economy and local businesses.
Adelaide’s Lord Mayor, Jane Lomax-Smith shared, “Market Square is set to become one of Adelaide’s most exciting new retail destinations and it is pleasing that Coles is returning to the Market district with Coles as one of the anchor tenants – especially after Coles was part of the Central Market Arcade prior to the redevelopment.
“This store will reflect the diversity and vibrancy of our city and will complement the longstanding heritage of the Adelaide Central Market.”
Market Square aims to attract an additional one million visitors annually and generate over 1,000 construction jobs, and the precinct is designed to enhance the city’s retail landscape while respecting the historical and cultural essence of its location.
The construction of Market Square is already underway, with expectations to open the area to the public in late 2026.
