New $80m integrated cancer centre to improve treatment for South Australians

The new $80m integrated cancer centre will include a Breast Cancer Centre of Excellence, with access to specialised services and global clinical trials.

A world-class $80 million cancer centre is set to open at St Andrew’s Hospital, which will increase access to integrated cancer care, precision medicine tools and global clinical trials.

The new facility will be transformative for South Australians living with cancer, particularly as the centre will also be home to the St Andrew’s Breast Cancer Centre of Excellence.

The Breast Cancer Centre will offer SA patients many key specialised services under one roof, from advanced diagnostics services, CT and mammography to radiation oncology, surgical and medical oncology consulting, allied health, and clinical trials.

There will also be two radiation therapy bunkers on the second floor.

The new facility is the result of a partnership between St Andrew’s Hospital, GenesisCare – the largest provider of integrated cancer care in South Australia – Dr Jones & Partners Medical Imaging, and Cambridge Medical Property.

Kaurna Elder, Uncle Tamaru, Member for Adelaide, Lucy Hood MP, and key partnership members gathered on Thursday 7 July to celebrate the significant development milestone of “topping out”.

“Topping out” refers to when the last beam (or equivalent) is placed on top of a building during its construction.

GenesisCare’s SA General Manager, Duy Tran, says the new integrated cancer centre will “provide patients access to leading sub-specialised doctors across all tumour streams, as well as holistic support throughout all stages of their treatment journey”.

Chief Executive Officer of St Andrew’s Hospital, Stephen Walker, said the new centre of excellence will act as an extension of St Andrew’s Private Hospital and will complement the existing cancer surgical and medical oncology services provided on campus.

“St Andrew’s breast care clinic is one of the busiest in South Australia and includes some of the best surgeons and nurses in the state, providing breast imaging, diagnosis and subsequent treatment for more than 700 patients each year,” says Mr Walker.

“We are also incredibly proud of the fact that the new precinct has a 6-star green building rating which represents world leadership in environmentally sustainable building practices.”

The 6-star rating comes from NABERS – a national rating system that assesses the environmental performance of Australian buildings, measuring energy efficiency, water usage, waste management and more.

The green healthcare precinct is set to open at the beginning of 2023.
