Local curator and artist, Katie Sandison, is launching her brand new art exhibition ‘Figurative Impressions and Abstract Expressions’ this weekend, which celebrates leading female painters in SA.

After cold-calling 16 abstract and figurative artists – all of whom stood out as vibrant, hard-working, and inspirational women – Katie has curated a unique art experience outside of the gallery system.

Located at the newly revitalised Adelaide Airport, the dynamic exhibition is an example of how numerous artists have cultivated successful careers in the arts outside of the traditional gallery structure.

“My intention was to provide a perfect opportunity for fellow female artists to show their creations in a public space that was outside the gallery system. I researched some of the most inspiring artists in Adelaide online and approached them with my concept and the response was fantastic,” said Katie.

“I then pitched this to the Adelaide Airport team and Penfolds Wine bar and Kitchen for sponsorship. The entire process was very fast-paced and challenging, [especially] during the complexities we face with COVID.

“I then choose the charity for the VIP opening door art prize, the Zahra Foundation, which has been so enthusiastic about the event [and continues to support] women and non-binary people.”

‘Figurative Impressions and Abstract Expressions’ features paintings from:

Eliza Piro                     Katie Pearson             Megan O’Hara             Kari Bienert

Katie Sandison            Melanie Crawford        Jackie Reichstein            Elizabeth Wojciake

Pia Kuykhoven            Kirsten Chambers       Gail Glasper                Sarah Keane

Simone Linehan          Bianca Smith               Renee Goulding            Sarah Kubcke

Curator Katie Sandison has developed a collaborative approach to art openings over the last few years with different exhibitions spaces.

The exhibition opens to the public on Sunday 1 May, displayed near Qantas Gate 26 & Virgin Gate 14 until 10 July 2022.
