If you’re travelling up to the Adelaide Hills over the long weekend, be sure to check out Hahndorf’s newest addition, the Roots & Reasons café.
Recently opening in the former home of cheese cellar and café, Udder Delights, the café is a plant shop, toasty destination and family-friendly venue all in one.
Launched in April last year, owners Matt and Amber Kemp say the café has been a favourite for locals looking for an affordable spot free from the tourist crowds.
“We’ve had very good reception from locals,” began Matt.
“Everyone’s just said how amazing it is that there’s a café like this up here,” Amber added. “… something that’s just chilled and relaxed and has what they want without it being touristy, because the locals need to go somewhere as well.”
A favourite on the menu is the range of toasties on offer, each with creative (and delicious) flavour combinations.
“Our Ruben-ish toasty has also become pretty popular… and the shrooms!” said Amber. The latter includes a delectable combination of sourdough, truffle mushrooms, fresh pecorino, rocket and hazelnuts.
Okay, now we’re hungry.
All bread, fruit, and vegetables are sourced from the local Hahndorf fruit and veg market, so ingredients are fresh and high quality.
The family-run and family-friendly venue is a sea of greens, wood and white. Vines arch across the interior of the space, above the café’s centrepiece – a great communal table of recycled Oregon timber from Uraidla, handmade by Matt and Amber themselves.
The green aspect relates to their painted walls, emerald titles which line the front counter space, and the endless number of plants that adorn the walls. Strategically placed, of course, as the café doubles as a plant shop and event workshop space.
